Rattle can primer
Hey guys, I'm getting ready to start blasting my bird down to bare metal and need a good primer in a rattle can. I'm doing the car in pieces so I don't want to get my spray gun out a bun of different times. Would etching primer be good enough to hold me off till spring when I can sand it real quick and shoot it with some high build primer and then paint it? Let me know if you know of anything.

yes that will be fine, but it will take alot of cans to do the whole car, but yea its pretty much the same as spray gun just alot less , it will hold up fine

That's what I figured but seems like other forums are serious haters on spray primer.....

Re: Rattle can primer
not sure if you are currently using the car, or what, but primer wont protect the body from rusting, so if you are going to be driving the car between now and when its painted, keep that in mind.

Re: Rattle can primer
As 86TA said primer won't protect you from rust. It's actually porous and will retain moisture. I don't think you should have a problem since it's only gonna be til spring but quick shot of clear coat would be the safest route.

Re: Rattle can primer
I would buy a cheap gun dedicated to primer. You get a whole lot more finish for your money using a gun. The spray cans are thinned with a ton of solvents and takes a bit longer to cure. In a 16 oz can, you may get the equivalent of 3-4 ounces of gun finish as the primer is so watered down and the can also has propellant in it.
Also, you should be using an epoxy primer for the first coat on bare metal.

Re: Rattle can primer
Well I ended up getting some 2k epoxy primer so I can hoot it out of my gun. Not really the direction I wanted to go, but I guess you gotta do things you really don't want to when it comes to a third gen!!!

Re: Rattle can primer
As long as you have your parts/car sitting inside they will be fine sitting in bare metal, just hit everything quick with 180 on a da, and scuff with a scotchbrite pad before your ready to prime, and your good to go.

Ooo, I can't remember the brand, but it came from house of color in my town. So I expect it's a real good brand. I have 83$ in it all.
