Wish thirdgens had better rust proofing

Guess this car was especially abused being driven in the winter...but still. Wow. I parted it out and bought a new shell to swap everything into. On the new one I POR15ed the entire underside and then added truck bedliner on top of that. The new one isn't going to see rain let alone snow, so hopefully it is good forever.

Re: Wish thirdgens had better rust proofing

I know I feel VERY fortunate to have a rust free car. Cars on the west coast just dont seem to rust like they do in other parts of the country (of course being garaged its entire life helps alot too!!).

Re: Wish thirdgens had better rust proofing

WOW that is terrible my car was originally a New Jersey car my mom drove it all year round and got it stolen a few times wrecked once and still has nothing but a little surface rust on body from sitting for 10+years here in Florida and the cross member is a little rusty but not even bad just surface rust. Soon all that will be taken care of though Never getting rid of this car, my mom bought it brand new off the showroom floor in 1988

Re: Wish thirdgens had better rust proofing

Mine seems alright, so that's strange. It's an '86 and just about all the rust I've seen on it was where the battery sits. Floor pans are very solid, what I've seen of the underside is clean. The only rust problem I've had is when I pulled off my Flowmaster catback, the whole inside of the muffler was basically rotted out!

I kid you not, my buddy and I sat there shaking the catback, and within five minutes, probably close to a pound of dusty, rusted up shreds of metal fell out.

I wish I knew where my IROC spent all it years, because I'm in southeastern Delaware, 20 miles from Rehoboth beach, and maybe 14-16 miles from Lewes, DE beaches, and there's basically no rust. Odd for being close to the salty air.
