replacing T top weatherstripping

what an undertaking.... i have run into several problems.
i took out the old stuff on the driver side, painstakingly cleaned the glue, and just set the new strip in with out glue or anything. however, due to the new striping being so thick and new, it was near impossible to get the glass top back on, and the window no longer meets the drip guard.

I decided i was in over my head and would just pay for some professional to do this. But the dealership wants 1100!!! and other body shops just plain dont want to. between that and the near constant rain, i feel like this is never going to get done.

has anyone actually successfully done this before? or happen to know of any reputable body shops in the Pacific northwest area?

Re: replacing T top weatherstripping

Search Super Chevy Magazine, article called
T Top Blues

There is a step-by-step with pics install.
There is a link posted by kitt1983, IIRC.

I didn't know about thirdgenn.org when we got our Camaro, nor was I aware of the article til I did some looking.

I paid a body shop $300 to install our stripping-- complete--
t-tops, hatch, doors, inner & outer sweeps, & cowl.

There is also some pics & tips by a TGO member, but I appologize... I don't recall his name.

Best of luck

yea the old stripping is a real bitch to get off, i had a heck of a time getting off the old stripping. even with the 3M adhesive remover, it takes quite a bit of elbow grease...

I was wondering the same thing about OER vs. Aftermarket? Have you decided on one and how did it work out? BTW I'm aware this is an old post but hope you guy's still have some input.

If you have the money,go with the OEM,but their are a lot of members that use the,Fairchild,OER,Metro after market ones and had success with them.

Re: replacing T top weatherstripping

IMO - stay away from OER. It has nothing to do with being OEM and there are some horror stories on the boards from those that have used it. I used Soffseal for my t tops and I was happy with it. People have had similar results with Metro. Of course, you could go GM, but it will set you back some coin. If you use an aftermarket weatherstrip for the t tops, be prepared to adjust your side windows, as they are molded a little thicker then the originals.

Re: replacing T top weatherstripping

Well thank you for the input. After some searching I found a seller on eBay (gmpartsfinder) with a new 8 piece set of original GM. Turns out they were not that costly. Cheaper than I could find anywhere on the net for aftermarket.

Bill - are these the ones you bought?
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1982-Through...item51a2753aa5

I hate to tell you this, but I don't think those are GM. In fact, I think those are the dreaded OER seals. You should get in touch with him and find out what you bought. If they are in fact OER brand, cancel the order if they have not shipped.

Re: replacing T top weatherstripping

That is them. I questioned if they were Original GM before purchasing and he replied back that they were. If they turn out not to be. I will return them due to false representation. Thanks for your help. I will keep you updated.

Just a note...if cost is a major concern for you, I would forget trying to find GM seals. I have never seen an 8 piece GM set, but even the 4 piece GM sets are usually over $500.

Re: replacing T top weatherstripping

that is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay excessive!!!!!! those are just the lower seals that go around the door. the actual T top kit has more pieces and is normaly around $300ish. that guy thinks he has gold because its OEM stuff.

he will sell it but only to some sucker that dosent know better.

Wow that's insane...he is wanting more for those than what I paid for my entire car. I need all new seals, but looks like I am going to find a aftermarket set that comes with all the ttop and door seals and make it work. Does anyone know where I could find that??

Okay, they arrived and they are OER #10164133. After seeing the other options out there, these will be installed on my 86' T/A. I will update on any issues.

Bill - I would return them based on principle. The seller lied to you. He told you they were GM. There are better choices out there then OER.
Here is a thread to give you an idea what you may be in for.
There are plenty more threads here of people who had bad experiences with this brand.

Re: replacing T top weatherstripping

Bill - I am sure Tony will chime in, but I am 99% positive those are metro seals. Definitely a better product then the OER brand.

I really hope you decide against using the OER seals. For the amount of work you need to do to install them, you really want to get it right the first time.

Re: replacing T top weatherstripping

There are so many negatives that are on the net about OER and their fitment. Specifically to the third gen fbody. I am off tomorrow and instead of busting open this box of new seals, I'll be going to the post office to send them back! Should only be out my return shipping. I see 1A Auto has the OE set. I need no more headaches so OE GM is what I'm after. Thank you 82tarecaro.

I am glad you reconsidered. Soffseal or Metro would have worked for you but you sure can't go wrong with the original GM stuff.

HI Bill those are the Metro seals. I also added the Fairchild door seals to our product line for you guys. Right now they are avail only by themselves or as a pair.

All of our other "Kits" will have the Metro door seals. I added these into the site pretty much for you guys on the board. https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/spon...trip-seal.html

I've actually helped them to develop some of their fox Mustang seals, and a few other goodies. You sit in my Mustang and there's part numbers all over the place...lol

Re: replacing T top weatherstripping

I wish I would've read or posted here before I ordered OERs months back, seemed to be all that was availible based on my pathetic search skills. They went in ok, few small hassles, and couldn't locate a decent weatherstrip adhesive locally, any recommendations for the future? Once in they are definitely thicker/harder than the originals, t-tops are very hard to latch, seem to seal ok though. OER door seals suck though they tore on installation and just don't quite fit right. Anyone got a source for the small seals on the plastic triangle at the leading edge of the window?
