Hope this is in the correct section, it didn't really seem to fit in any section well.

I'm going to add fog lights to my camaro, was looking for info on how they are supposed to mount. I've already replaced my grill with one that has the openings in it where the fog lights usually go.

I've see the fog light mounts for sale before but have not actually seen them on a car to see how they are mounted. If anyone can describe to me how they are mounted, possibly with some pictures that would be awesome.

Also, this is probably a question for the electronics section, but figured i'd keep it in one post. When wiring the fog lights, where should I pull the power from? Should I pull it off the same line as the head lights and have the switch break the ground inside the car (I plan to replace my left plastic piece and installing an original stock fog light switch in the proper place), or is there another method?

One other question.

Does anyone know offhand or mind going and measuring theirs, the dimensions on the OEM fog lights?

Looking on ebay the prices for the fog light brackets and lamps are a little ridiculous. New OEM fog lights, 360 for a set... outrageous. The cheapest brackets I saw was $200 for a set of brackets with a used set of fog lights.

I'm just going to buy some after market fog lights of roughly the same size and make my own brackets to hold them. I don't see any reason to spend 500+ dollars just to get OEM fog lights lol. I went by Walmart today and saw a set of fog lights for 20 dollars that looked pretty close to the ones I saw on ebay, I'm just not 100% sure on the dimensions.

Yea i posted about the size/dimensions the other day, havnt gotten any responses yet. i would love to know the answer to most of these questions as well.

I stopped by Brock's Camaro on my way home today. He had a firebird fog light which he said was the same size as the Camaro's and it was a 3" x 5" lens.

He didn't have any of the brackets on his shelfs, said he was going to check his salvage yard for some for me, but not a big deal, I looked at where they mount on the bumper and I can easily make my own bracket.

Just need to find a descent set of fog lamps that look close to original to put in. The wiring I will still have to figure out though. I ordered a new fog switch for it today and it's got 4 posts on the back side of it. My guess is the both fog lights run the ground all the way to the switch, and then on the other side of the switch runs to an actual ground, with the middle post being a hot wire for the light on the switch that lights up when the lamps are actually on. There is probably a wiring diagram in my hayne's repair manual, I'll look it up when I get all the stuff in to make sure I wire it right.

As cheesy as this sounds, check the auxiliary light section at your local autozone. They have a pair for around 20 bucks that are shockingly similar to the oem style. If the dimensions of the light housings are different, its not by much. Check them out and see what you think.

when you get the mounts, the spot they bolt to on the bumper support is self explanitory. two holes, can't miss them

Aftermarkets can look as good or better than originals. I had aftermarkets, took them off for OEM, and then put them back on because I liked them better. the OEM looked hazy and dull, and with my clear turn signals the aftermarkets looked better

It's hard to tell in that picture, how far forward are the fog lights supposed to be?

The ones he has look really similar to the ones Brock showed me that he can get at Brock's Camaro (803-955-3181). He lists stuff on ebay a lot too. He's local to me so I stop by his place all the time lol. I'm just looking for something a little closer to OEM look with the grid pattern, where as those are mostly clear in the front.

I picked these up today for 20 dollars at advance, I think they look close to what I've seen of OEM ones. Not exact (these have a clear bar in the middle and the black trim doesn't go all the way around), and will have to see how they look when I get them installed to decide if I'm going to keep them or not.

i paid big bucks for a pair of OEM lights.....then saw ones at a NAPA that looked just like them for like 20 bucks.....i would have bought the cheap ones....i'm sure the OEM ones break just as quickly when they get hit by a stone....

Hmm, don't know why I was thinking the OEM ones had a cross grid pattern rather than only vertical lines. But those do look somewhat close other than the yellowish tint to them.

I will have to look around some more now. Although the ones I picked up from advance already would probably look fine, the bracket I make will depend on what fog light I use and would rather only have to make the bracket once lol.

I also still need to know far forward they are supposed to sit.

I finally finished installing my fog lights. I'm pretty happy with how they turned out even though they aren't an exact stock look, but I think they look pretty good. The lights on don't look that great with my phone camera, I'll have to get better ones with a real camera later.

I just picked up these same lights, and going to mount them this weekend.
Did you make a bracket for them? Do you have any pics of that? Trying to figure out how to mount these.

Yes, I made a bracket for them, but I don't have any pictures of it.

It wasn't anything special, I just took some flat bar, 2" x 3/8" about 2" long. Drilled a hole dead center on a few pieces and used them as spacers.

Then I took another piece of the flat bar about 3" long, drilled a hole on one end center of it.

And used a 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" x 1/4" piece of angle also about 2" long, with a hole in one side, and welded it to the other end of the long piece of flat bar (welded the side without the hole down of course).

So the spacers went on top of the bumper where the holes are and the long flat bar bolted on top of them. Only one bolt (even though there are 3 holes here), so that I could rotate them left and right to position them correctly and then tight down to hold them in place.

Then the angle at the other end is what I mounted the fog lights to. I modified the fog lights though to get the kind of movement I wanted. I used a dremel and cut a slit in the back of the fog light casing, just like what is on the bottom of them, and I moved the little bracket and bolt to the back of the casing. That gave me up and down tilt. I also cut the entire little bottom section off that the mounting bracket and bolt went through, to make sure I had enough clearence height wise.

It's nothing special, I'm not great at designing things like this but it does the job. And it doesn't have to be pretty since you can't see it I probably didn't do a very good job explaining how I did it in words so if I get time this weekend I'll see if I can get some pictures of it.

Also to note, If you haven't already did a test fit, you will discover with these lights they are too tall if you leave the mounting hole and bracket on the bottom of them.

I was looking at mine today. What exactly to the foglights mount too? All I see is plastic back in there. I thought the would mount metal, but I don't see any that a bracket could attach too.

Hey, sorry I didn't get a chance to take any pictures this weekend. It's been raining all weekend and I don't have access to a shop atm to pull it inside somewhere =P

As for teh mounting location, your bumper is behind the nose of the car and is made of metal. Right behind the edge of the opening for the fog light you should be able to see / feel it. And there should be 3 holes on both sides right behind the openings where factory fog lights would mount.

Hey can anyone help, I secured a pair of factory fogs from an IROC in a junkyard. I have an 85 Iroc and the pigtails with bulbs are there. However, the front bumper may have been changed because there are no holes where they should mount. Instead there are these big black plastic blocks with one big screw going through them. It's in the perfect spot where they would normally mount. Should I just take those black blocks off and drill holes? Maybe they are under them? Are the blocks serving any purpose? Thanks!

Attached is a diagram of how the fog lights were attached from the factory.

IIRC, the fog lamps are "hinged" at the bottom with a long rod. The big screw you're looking at is used to adjust the up/down aim of the light.

I appreciate you taking the time to find that information for me but that isn't the screw that I am talking about. It has nothing to do with the fog lamp assembly or attached metal mounts. My problem is actually a black plastic piece mounted to the bumper brace that is in the way of mounting the metal foglight brackets to. It may be hiding the two holes that I need. Just wondering if this bumper setup was from the non IROC/Z28 models. It does have the correct open bowtie in it though. I may have to take a picture when I get home from work. I know how the fog lamps mount because I was the one who took the full assemblies out of the junkyard IROC. Anyone?

Could be a very early production 85,... or a replacement impact bar from an earlier car.

IIRC none of the early cars (82-84 ) have the holes pre-drilled in the impact bar for mounting the fog light brackets,.... becasue fog lights were not a factory option during those years.
