92 Front Bumper on 1989 GTA?

I bought a 1992 Firebird Front bumper cover, front bumper (the big heavy piece that goes behind the cover) and all the parts in between (including the turn signals and fog lights) I also got the wiring harness piece that goes to the fog and turn signal lights. I noticed that the lights were different, but the guy at the junkyard wanted too much for them, so I just took the outside bezels, the actual light, and the metal peices that you set the light in.

I always liked the banshee front a lot, and wanted too make mine look cool like those, and since I am getting it painted, I figure this would be the time to do it... anyways.. Has anyone done it ? Do I have all the pieces I need. Will the headlights work right?

Is the regular firebird (w/ sport appearance package) have the same front? I looked in a bunch of pictures of 91-92 T/A's and it looks exactly like my bumper.

I was thinking of going back and getting the gfx that go on the door.. but I don't know yet. I don't know if I can afford them.

There are differences in the part #s for the headlights but I don't know they were different enough to cause a problem. As far as the nose bolting up to an older('89) style,,, you shouldn't have a problem with that. It might look a little odd w/o the rest of the fx (doors & -ss) to match,, but you can always add them later

The headlights are different. I think you need the trim bezel and the top door part. But thats about it. I am in the process of doing the same conversion too. The hardest pieces to find are the 2 gfx that go on the fenders. I am going to have to buy them new.

I think those 92 ground effects look cheesy as hell. I prefer the 91 style with that banshee nose but no ground effects.

Hey Jim the 91 and 92 Firebird with aero, Trans ams and GTA's all had the same gfx. I dont know what you are talking about. Maybe you mean the pre 90 gfx?

The Formulas and base firebirds didn't have the Trans Am style ground effects in 91. They had a nice, clean appearance but with the new style nose. In 92, I believe that all of them got the ridiculous ground effects, not just the TA and GTA.

91 & 92 front fender fx are the same no matter what,, p/n 1250 8854 & 1251 7757,, there are no other part listing for the factory gfx on the front fenders for those 2 years.

I pulled off my '89 Front bumper assembly, and test fitted the '92s.

I decided I want to do a conversion to a '92, so I called the junkyard and am picking up the rest of the gfx and the back bumper.

I can't afford a '92 aerospoiler though.. over 400 (for new) is pretty expensive. I am not paying even near that for everything else.

It is missing the front driver front fender gfx piece.. where can I get one new? GM?

The car is a '92 base firebird that is loaded (fog lights, power everything).. It has all the side ground effects and they look just like the GTA ones.. are the ground effects exactly the same as a '92 GTA?

I am going to see if they will throw in the front lights with all the crap I bought.. they are broken anyway, but I want the top part that says "pontiac"...

Anyone interested in purchasing a complete set of 89 GTA ground effects and bumpers in the Bay Area.. perfect shape?

If you separate the parts, I'd be interrested in the right (passenger) front piece that attaches to the bottom front of the fender.

The Trans Am, GTA, and Firebirds with the sport appearance package all have the same exact bumper covers and ground effects.

I dunno about those 'ridiculous' ground effects... it's no more ridiculous than an IROC, with those big assed fake hood louvers, huge IROC decals on the side (just so you don't forget what kind of car you drive) and cheesy 70's-looking taillights.

The Formula never had ground effects, not even in 1992.

IROC ground effects are a whole lot more pedestrian than those 92 ground effects. Those 'waterfall' gfx are just plain tacky in my opinion. I'm not a big fan of the ground effects of any thirdgen firebird, but I think those are the worst. I have always liked the appearance of the formula better than the Trans Am, mine included. As much as I love my GTA, I still prefer the lines of an 88-90, and especially 91-92 Formula. It's all about personal preference. I also hate the 91-92 style Z28 spoiler, but I'm in the vast minority with that opinion.

Also notice that my IROC has no decals of any sort

i agree with jim about the 91-92 ground effects. i pretty much dispise them. i am pretty in diffrent to the 92 Z28 wing, i prefer the lower cut one, but dont care. i like my TA's Ground effects, i dont like em like 91-92 Camaro Ground Effects (awwwwww perfection) but i think mine are fine. its all opinion though.

I love those GFX. They don't make the car look too "bulky" or "square" like previous years. Don't get me wrong, I love the look of some 87-90 3rd gens w/GFX....but the 91/92 T/As appearance is a breath of fresh air.

91/92 T/As are some of the nicest looking F-bodies ever made IMHO

I second theformula's statement, 91-92 were THE NICEST 3rd gens around. Oh except for the Notchback in 88. in 91-92 more base model firebirds got the sport appearance package than not. so it is very easy to find the gfx for them. Except the fender ones. They ALL seem to be broken.

Well, I picked up the ground effects and bumper today. I also got the tops to the headlights and I got my old ones to work like the 91/92 ones. You need:

1. Top Plate (painted)
2. Bezel Behind light bulb
3. Bezel that goes over light bulb
4. Light bulb
5. Outside plastic bezel

.. and it will all line up. Unfortunately I couldn't find one of the rear bezels. I hope I can pick one up at the dealer.

When I am done, only the aero-spoiler and the tailights will be different. I figured I'll get those later (When I have the cash and opportunity) The 91/92 aero spoiler is really cool, but I heard the stock ones would often literally crack in half. A repro in fiberglass is like 450.00 shipped I think...

I still need the passenger side door ground effect (the big piece under the door) and the driver side front fender piece.. anyone know where I can find these? All the junkyards I have called don't have 91/92 firebirds.

I'll post some pic's when I put all the stuff on (tommorow)..

Just my opinion, but I think the 91-92 birds are the best looking thirdgens. just wanted to say that the white gta is tight.

Yeah.. there great looking.. but if you try to put the front fender ground effect on you 87-90 GTA you will notice that the holes that the old ground effects were mounted with are ABOVE the new 91-92 ground effects.. goddammit... I don't know if I am going to go through with the conversion.. anyone know how to fill holes??? I am getting the whole cat painted, so destroying the paint in the process doesn't matter.

Dude, the 91/-92 aero spoiler is fiberglass. How would it crack in half? I had it on mine with no problems for 5 years and have never heard of any other owners having trouble with them.

What do you think the GT Auto Accessories is made out of? Yep, you guessed it .... fiberglass.

Don't believe everything you hear bro.

NOTE: the best way to do this swap is to buy a base model 91-92, then swap the stuff from both cars--then sell the transformed V6 ride...

------------------
'83 HOmaro--doesn't run
'92 Bird--burnt to a crisp
'78 T/A 400--fast, Burt Reynold's style
'83 Buick LeSabre--the Ghetto Cruiser

Ok.. I didn't do the swap because I needed a bunch of pieces and I wanted my car painted before I went back to school. I am thinking of selling my 92 GFX / bumpers, but I might keep them. This is what I found out.

All the ground effects on the 85-90 Trans Ams are mounted higher than the 91-92 style. This means that if you have the older gfx, you will have a bunch of holes showing in these places:

1. Front Fender -- 5 Holes each
2. door -- 2 or 3 holes, I never found out.
3. Rocker area - 0 holes

If you wanted to do the swap, it would probably be most economical to buy two new front fenders and have the holes in the doors filled.

I was thinking of just buying a 87-90 formula to do the swap. Then holes will not be an issue. The front fenders may have to be slightly modified to accept the new front end by cutting the top mounting hole bracket and moving it back slightly.

Anyway, I got my car painted and it looks pretty good with the old ground effects. The new ones would have looked pretty nice, but I am missing 2 ground effect pieces, the rear bumper crash bar, the tailights and the aero-spoiler (which i think mounts further up leaving even more holes...)

Anyone have any info as far as swapping 91-92 ground effects on a 82-84 style Trans am? There are almost no ground effects on it, just the two accents near the wheel wells, so no holes to cover. Im concerned about hearing that the bumper itself (not cover) was different during those years and would need to be changed too. any help?

The impact bar was different in 82-84 according to p/n's so, you will need one from a 91-92 as well .
