WTF!?!? Can your dash just up and crack for no reason?

Okay my dash in my 91 Camaro was in fairly good condition. It had a few small cracks on the corner of the dash on the passenger side, but that was it. So one cold morning last week(like around 10-15 degrees) I come out to start my car, and notice a crack on my dash, going from the windsheild, halfway up past the defroster vents, above my steering wheel. I was kinda pissed off, didnt know what happened. So I drove it like that, and today, I go out to start it, and the crack is all the way up to the end of the dash and it has spider webbed off into another direction!

What the hell? Is it the cold weather doing it? I had an 88 Monte Carlo, and it had one crack on the dash when I got it, and it went through two cold winters without that crack getting any bigger or any other cracks showing up, so what the heck is going on? We dont have a garage or anything, so what would you guys think went wrong, or do you know anything I could do in the future to prevent it from happening again? Thanks in advance.

I wouldn't know what effect 15 degrees has on a dash (I live in CA) but I keep mine just about soaked in Eagle One protectant and I use a sunshade or a towel when I park in the sun. My dash is the original and is in absoute MINT condition and my car has 96K. I apply the protectant atleast once a week if not more. When I park my car during the winter I cover the dash with a towel to keep it as warm as possible Same goes for my underdash padding, constant application of Eagle One Protectant.....

I've been looking for a new dash for my car, since i feel the one big crack makes it look like a pos
Anyway, I've heard of vinyl "covers" that slide overtop of your existing dash, giving you a completely new skin on the dash. Anyone have some more info on them?

I don't know if they still have them (no catalog handy) but, JCWhitney used to sell molded 'caps' for a large variety of cars made by Accu-Form.

I've found them, but they're $100. Still interested? I'd pass.

Yech, $100, and I'd need to convert that into Canadian funds. That's kinda sick, but I guess it has a better chance of standing up then some used dash pad that could crack anyday. I've thought about covering the dash in leather too, which I may do if it's less then $100

I just saw these dash covers that you guy's are talking about on ebay. It looks like a clean, nice fit and from what I could see in the picture it wasn't bad. I'm considering getting one.......
