Wipers very slow - seized linkage?
Looking for any experience here! I have a 1990 TA GTA. The wipers work, but are extremely slow to move up and down. I suspect the linkage is seizing up and corroded. I'm not sure (yet) how to remove the entire linkage and break it down to re-lubricate the linkage points. But, is it possible to accomplish this in place with penetrating oil? I can't find any videos on how to access, remove, and repair the wiper linkage, and the Chilton's manual diagrams are useless. Also, the Chilton manual shows a couple of specialized tools.....are those something I need to get?

Not all that hard to get to. Just take off that screen in front of the windshield and you'll be able to see it all. Shouldn't require any special tools.

Thank you! I'm hoping to not have to remove (or replace) the entire assembly.

I have a similar issue with my wipers, I've confirmed that my linkage is not binding or seized. In my research to remedy the issue I found that there are 6 different part numbers for the control board on the wiper motor for 1989 alone. It's possible the control board could be your issue.

That could be too. When I started looking into the issue, a lot popped up about the linkage seizing up which makes sense. I'd like to check that first before getting a new wiper motor/computer but trying to get to the linkage assembly is proving difficult. I tried removing that plastic mesh but couldn't make it so. Then of course, I have no idea if you can lube the linkages in place, or if the mechanism has to be removed. Nothing in the Chilton book either.

You could always try spraying some kind of penetrant like PB blaster or something into the joints with a straw and then after a bit repeat spraying with the wipers on. Can't hurt but may make a difference

Re: Wipers very slow - seized linkage?
What' the problem removing the plastic mesh thing? Step one, raise hood. There's one small bolt/screw in the middle by the windshield to undo then I believe one plastic serrated pin on the driver side pushed down into a hole and two on the passenger side. You'll see to flat plastic spots and if you feel under the inside above the mesh you'll feel the pins on that side. Pry them gently up and out from around the outside edges ,and you'll still need to be careful with the washer hoses so take it easy. There may be more pins holding it on but just stick a good sized flat blade screwdriver under them and they should come out very easily with little effort
yours may be more brittle than mine so be gentle
