CB mounting positions

hey guys, i am thinking, well am going to buy a CB radio in the near future and am wondering where all of u guys mount ur antenna and radio. For the radio i am considering the passenger side part under the dash, down where your feet are. The antenna has me confused, i have t-tops and i dont really think that putting it on the bar across the top would work as well as the back hatch, what do you guys think.

am i the only one who has/is getting one of these for there thirdgen. some may call me a *******, but hey it's better than rice so stop hatin. j/k.

thanks

I think you should get dual lighted fiberglass antennas and mount them to your mirrors

I was looking through a Jc Wittney catalog last night and they sell Cb antinas(sp? im tired) . They look just like cell phone antinas, about 6 inches long. Then you dont have to have the four footer antina.

Excuse the spelling,
Tim

You can get an adapter at radio shack to go to your cars radio antenna.

ok, word's of advice if any of you do ever buy a CB do not buy those little cell phone like antenna's suck major A$$ trust me. my dad has one a little bigger than that one and it isn't great. flush mount, to hard just put it under that dash near feet, i think the previous owner did the same. four footer that's small i am thinkin bout either 4-5 foot fiberglass at minimum or 6+ foot steel. i wana be able to shoot all the way across the county and for that i need a good antenna.

i think we all need CB's
"What's the 20 on that Bear?"
"He's rollin northbound just passed the 73 yard stick."
"Copy, have a good one."

lol so much fun, lol

an antenna that you put under your headliner.. a nice long fiberglass one.. or that goes from u'r wheelwell to the back of the hatch underneith everything..
i want a CB in my car, except my friends don't like that idea.. (we got cell phones why would we want a CB?)
hey, cruising down the strip
("yo, BOP.. 70 chevelle 454 at ______ Street.. sweet car.. worth checkin' out"
"roger that, *pulls a u turn* update if it moves"
"roger")

ok, i have weird ideas and it would work on a cell phone.. but the bills on long distance calls add up.

when I got my GTA the guy i got it from had a little Radio Shack CB stuffed between the passenger seat and the E-brake handle. it also had one of those things you plug into your radio anntena. I kept it in for about two weeks cause i got tired of trying to set the E-brake and having to fight with the CB when i wanted to release the E-brake..

It depends on what model of radio you buy...some actually have remote display units, or controls on the handset itself, so that you can hide the radio without having to worry about reaching it. As far as the antenna goes, again, it depends on how permament you want to make your install. if you want really good range (through a high-end, physically larger antenna) you'll probably end up drilling. The roof is your best mounting option if range and good reception, since F-bodies sit so low, and you want the antenna high to catch clean signal. I use a magnetically mounted one, since I don't use it all the time. And I totally agree on having one, they are better than any radar detector. I've made several cross-country trips in my '92, and I've always had plenty of notice about speed traps (at least fifty miles) I also use a Lindsay amplifier (a cable tv signal amp) to boost my range. It requires a 120V AC outlet, however, and the proper adaptors to convert the antenna lead to coaxial cable. It's much better than those crappy amps you hear people use on their CBs.

The easy answer... don't.

Some backwoods-bubba had a CB in my Formula... they hacked the antenna wiring to the radio, drilled holes in the console and generally jsut screwed up everything. Get a hand held radio if anything.

You can attach the antenna anywhere away from the window so that your ****** won't get tangled in the antenna when you stick your head out the window to hoot and holler at the women in the other lane. :sillylol:

Sorry... couldn't help it

Chalk up another vote for a hand-held unit, or better yet step into the 90s and get a hand-held FM unit.

i have a smaller cb in my 84 z,it is mounted on the pass side, like on the radio pod thing that is down by your feet,i had to buy a external speaker, and had it mounted ontop the radio/ac part,as for a antenna, mine is right in the center of the back window,at the top,its like glued there or something, works good though, like they said you cant reach out 50 miles away, but 10-15 miles,no problem, goodluck with yours.

Here's a crazy thougt... I put a hitch on my car last summer for the bikes. If you don't want to hack up the car, you could do a hitch mount CB antenna...

have any of you ever used one of those handheld cb's??? my dad bought one b/c it was cheap and he imediatly bought a better anntenna, i tried the little antenna i couldn't pick anything up on it, much less talk to anybody. I was sitting right next to a trucker while he was talking on his CB and i couldn't hear jack crap. I am think i will probably try the 2 antenna inside and maybe even throw one in on the back of the hatch, that should give me lots of range.

if any of you dont believe my on those little cb's go buy one and try it out for yourself!!!

You mich be able to get one running along the to of the rear hatch area....under the panels....you know what i am talkn about.....but then you don't get it up in the air......you can put as many as you want in the car and it will not work as good as one in the air...get a magnet mount.....take it off when you don't need it.

CB

I travel across country a couple of times a year. I have an old cell phone mount from the trans hump on the passenger side. I mount the CB on the cell phone mount and run the antenna wire under the passenger side to the rear hatch area. I use a magnetic antenna base with a thin 5 foot whip on the outside of the car, centering it between the hatch and T-tops. It's removeable when you stop for the night and the reception is about 5 to 10 miles on a clear day. It's helped me a couple of times and I recommend using one if you are driving into an area that you are not familiar with on a daily basis.

It's almost better than a radar/laser detector. You can listen to the truckers talk and get heads-up about police in the area. It does have a "residual" affect though. The cop at "mile marker 125" may have left there an hour ago, as the truckers don't time stamp thier sightings.

i have to disagree with that one statement,i think it is better than theradar detector,i mean yea they tell you when a cop is shooting you with there little gun,but by the time them things go off,its to late....might help ya once maybe even twice, however, yea the cb does have its downfalls, but, they are a great addition to any car......ive been pulled over some many times, which alot could have been not pulled over,if i would have had my cb on.....thats what i get for runnin around my town without it on,just my $.02........

i completely agree with 84,86,88 z-28, my dad and i are traveling from my house now to my old house in OH and that's about an 8 hour drive, long time in a truck cab. anyway, there have been plenty of times that cb's has saved us from a ticket, and one time they were all hollerin about this back up that we were just about 2 exits from so we hopped off and the guys we met up with after we got back on said we probably saved and hour easy, trust me you dont wana be stuck in traffic for an hour in a non extended cab truck, it sux. i kbnow i am gonna get one now and think i will mount it where i originally planned unless i find another good place. still torn on the antenna's i cant decide, i like the idea of having more than one but am not sure about the reception inside, if it would even help at all. i would buy 2 fiberglass ones for inside and one metal magnetic mount one for outside and would hope to have good range, i should for 3 antenna's i mean come on. thanks guys this has enlightend me about mounting spots for the antenna(s).

oh yea, i would recommend getting one to everybody, they help lots.

i travel a good bit myself so i got a good strong unit. uniden 66XL.
I bought a "lil will" antenna from wilson , its a magnet mount. i mount it just infront of my wing, run the coax undre the hatch and up to the radio, its powerd by the cig lighter. if you get a CB my advice is to by a good unit that will last. uniden , president galaxcy,or an old johnson if you can find a good one. get it peaked tuned and matched , that way you will get out clear and strong.
i place my radio between the console and the pass seat back, seems it was almost made for it to sit there.

My CB sits right above my right leg. The CB mic sits on the flat piece where the defroster and trunk release buttons are. Works mint, isn't in the way of anything. Ran the wires through the ALDL port hole.
