Earl's "seems" to have a better rep. Here's the Earl's version from Spohn:

Re: Russell Street Legal Braided Brake Lines?

I assume length and/or number of lines per application.

Re: Russell Street Legal Braided Brake Lines?

I would use something other that russels. I have fitted enough An lines to realize that their product is not as good as aeroquip or earls.

why is that? you have to back up that statement with some kind of proof. Russel is one of the largest AN fitting manufacturers.

Re: Russell Street Legal Braided Brake Lines?

I have Russell ss steel lines on my four wheels dics brakes for the last 8 yrs.I have had no problems with fit or other issues. A better product then the rubber hoses, my opinion.

I USED to run Russell lines on my car. Till I backed it out of the driveway one night and saw fluid on the ground. A quick look showed that the rear "T" fitting on the axle had broken. It was a good thing I caught it when I did. I also know 3 other people who have had fittings break on their Russell lines.

I ended up contacting Russell and sending them my broken line. Lon from TDS had the same thing happen, so I sent his line back with mine. Russell sent us both a complete new set of lines. It also looked like they changed the "T" fitting to use a better material.

Too late for me as I had already taken my factory line to a fab shop that specializes in Aeroquip hoses and had them make me a custom line. When I converted to 1LE front brakes, I ditched my Russell lines for the Earl's kit.

When I get around to upgrading my rear brakes, I'll use the Earl's lines I have.

Re: Russell Street Legal Braided Brake Lines?

Can you compare the lines to your Earls? Steel braided lines are steel braided lines, so I doubt anyone could. Just because you had a defective Russell and now run Earls (on the front only) doesnt make them any better or worse...and has nothing to do with your experience with AN fittings...lol. I'm sure lots of people have had defective Earls lines, that doesnt make Russell lines better!

Hey, you asked another poster to back-up his statement with some kind of proof. All I did was share my experience with Russell. I forgot to mention that it took quite a bit of back-and-forth to get the replacement lines from Russell. They were very concerned at first, but then took their time following thru.

I also didn't like how the Russell lines fit on my original front brakes. Felt like there was too much tension on the caliper fittings. I was always concerned they could break and kept a close eye on them.

For my 1LE upgrade, I really wanted Goodridge brake lines, but they were on long-term backorder with no indication of when I would ever get them. I went with the Earl's brake lines because many on TGO use them, I've heard no complaints and I could get them quickly from Summitt. I was pleased with the fit of the Earl's lines.

I currently don't use Earl's lines on the rear because I had custom lines made prior to buying my Earl's lines. Plus, I currently have the pre '89 rear brakes and no one makes all the lines I needed. When I upgrade to the PBR rear brakes, I'll use the rest of the Earl's 1LE kit I bought.

Based on my experience (and that of 3 other friends), I decided to no longer use Russell brake lines. If you want to use Russell brake lines, by all means use Russell brake lines. Maybe your experience has been better.

If you want to talk AN fittings, my experience is that Aeroquip is superior.

Re: Russell Street Legal Braided Brake Lines?

As for the line and fitting quality.

If you go buy some AN Fittings say AN 10, Earls, Russell and Aeroquip all the same and look at how they are made and how well they thread you will see which is the best.

The aeroquip has a finer thread vs. the Russell. The Russell sounds like a rusty gate when you piece the together the fittings.

Now take a piece of aeroquip hose and a russell hose and twist them into a circle. The russell will kink first. The aeroquip is difficult to kink.

The only leak I have had when plumbing AN line was with a russell. The fitting leaked at the swivel.

I am glad to hear that you had better luck and were able to save money too.

I had to cancel my order on the Russel lines after reading this, lol.
I went with the Earls kit from spohn for cars with rear drums [Im going from rear drums to LS1 rear discs, so I hope I got the right kit]
