Need help with Subwoofer ideas...

Hey all.

I have a few questions about how all this car audio stuff works. So far I've come up with this idea.

Pioneer DEH-P4400

Two 12" Rockford Fosgates 200RMS

Kenwood 150 x 2, 230 x 2 (@ 2 ohms)

Q Logic box

...I figured this seems to be the best set up. This equipment will be going into my 88 Oldsmobile, since I can't put it in my late IROC-Z, rest in peace. Well atleast I now got the trunk space!!
..My friend said "ya sure 150 watts is good enough?" He said I would need atleast 250 watts powering each one. Is that right?? I read in magazines that the idea is to have the amp RMS be within the speaker's RMS. The speaker's RMS is 200, so the amp has 150, thats enough to power it, is it not?? If I get an amp higher than 200, won't I blow out the speakers. I mean couldn't I just bridge them and wire them reciever pos to speaker pos, neg speaker to pos speaker, and then neg speaker to reciever neg. Whatever thats called, parallel? series? I've done it before. But that would give me 230 watts, that won't blow out speakers?? I'm looking for a good thump in the 'Olds, my budget is 1000 dollars. Tell me what ya think of the set up. Any changes I should make, criticize me, I'm up for it!

Thanks a lot, Tom.

rockfords are always underated. i had a friend with a 360a2 (180wx2) powering 2 punch z's (100 constant) you'd only be 30 watts over and even if was too much power you could just turn the gain down on the amp

if you want to thump for 1000, pick up an adire brahma (350ish) and a jbl bp1200.1 (300ish), build a box for 40 bucks of materials and you can still buy a nice headunit like an alpine or a kenwood.. thump thump!

Blowing two Sony 12s sounds about right... Yay! Really, your amp should never be playing at full power. Keep it below 70% and you'll keep the amp cool and your speakers' surrounds in less than 50 pieces. A general rule for amping a sub: make sure the sub's RMS is higher than the amp's RMS by about 10-15%

ChevyLuva3... come out to Toms River on AUG 10th! We got a big gathering forming at the Stop & Shop on Rt 37.

Forget the Q-Logic box if your on a budget. I just bought a box from a fellow here on the boards and so far am nothing but impressed. Hes name is RZN8R, hes got excellent deals and will custom make the box for you to the specifications of the subs you choose, definetly worth your time and money. If you decide to talk to him, tell him GoldenSwordZ28 sent ya. Send him a PM and see what you guys can work out. He'll be able to make you a NICE box for an incredible price.

sounds good all except for that amp..go with a cheaper rockford, that would do it just fine...if those are the punchz's then don't get to big of one, those subs don't hadle that much abuse at all, if you got a set of the HE's then you'd be fine, just get a bigger amp and you'll be happy

why don't you look at jbl? for under 300 bucks, you can get a 1200-watt amp which is 2 (or 1) ohm stable into one channel... and its actually underrated, i believe it was tested at something like 1380... the model i'm talking about is the bp1200.1, it comes in less powerful versions as well, such as the 600.1 or 300.1...

Hey guys thanks for the posts! Wouldn't all those watts be waaay too much though for my speakers. My speakers can only handle 200 RMS tops. Not gonna power 500 watts worth into them, unless of course I can?? Don't know too much bout the eletronic world.

the answer is simple, just turn it down..turn the amp gain down, and the subwoofer preout on your deck down. Then when it's time to buy better subs, there's no need for a bigger amp. And for the price of that amp, you can't go wrong.!

thats true indeed, you can buy a 600.1 for like 220 or something, but.. why not just pay the extra 80 bucks and double your power for down the road? makes a whole lot of sense...

Dude, just my 2 cents...I have 2 Audiobahn 12" Natural Series w/ a 400 watt Concept Amp powering them, and they are in a custom sealed box in the t-roof compartment. With the Sub setting on the deck turned all the way down, it's loud. Witht he gain up, and sub settings at mid, your *** is getting out of the car. If you set it up right, you don't need a killer amount of power. My previous amp was a Kenwood 1000 watt, yet the COncept pound wayyyyyy harder. Quality before quantity. I'll try get some pics up soon..... by the way everyone, I just got my new 3 1/2 cowl, and new pearl white with mettalic blue pearl paint. As I just said, i'll try get ome pics up soon.
Peace

Hmmm thanks for the posts... good point, learn something new everyday. So does this JBL power two subs? Cuz I need it to power both.

the great thing about the jbl amps is that they are 1 ohm stable.. which means you can pretty much any 2 subs to it and you wont overheat the amp.. 4-ohm dvc, 2-ohm dvcs, 4-ohm svc, 2-ohm svc, all of them can be wired up to get maximum power from the amp... its quite flexible, another great reason to get it now--it will definitely work for any upgrades you choose to do

Yeah, its about impossible to beat the jbl 1200.1 when having a small budget. It puts out crazy power, good reliability, good clean power, and CHEAP!!!!.

JBL 1200.1 Amp is a "mono" amp, what exactly does that mean besides it only powers one channel??

....Oh btw, would putting all this audio equipment DEFINATELY draw too much power, to the point where my car may not start, or where lights dim? Does a capacitor clear that up? Should I get that??

thats what it means, it powers one channel.. but you can still hook up a virtually unlimited number of subs to it.. subs are meant to be mono, because stereo subs is just stupid.. for your current application, with the gain turned down (to avoid blowing the subs), you will not draw significant power from your electrical system.. most likely your stock setup will be fine... a capacitor will most likely be unnecessary, so don't waste your money on one unless you determine that you really need it..

What you will want to do is replace all your factory battery/alt leads with some bigger cable (head to ebay, I've done lots business with Bag-Boy they are very good). You will need to replace the power wire from the alt to the batt (use 4ga or so), the grounds, and the wire from the batt to starter. Then run a 2ga or bigger wire out back to feed the amp (with grounds being the same size as the power). If your battery and alt are in good working order then all should be well.

with a budget of $1000.00 you can get a lot better than the little power you will be getting out of the fosgates. follow me, 2 pioneer premier dvc (e-bay) 12's 1000 watts each and a clarion 1000x2 amp (crutchfield) for just 5 bills
