easy solution to stealthing or flushing decks
well, as i was cruising the boards, i noticed a kit by scosche specifically for our cars. i had previously done a stealth setup for my old deck, but it was more work then most people would like to do. however, with this kit, the deck is flush with the kit. all the others i had used stuck out. so, anyone looking for an easy way to stealth their decks, or just to have a better looking install, this is an easy way to do it. however, i do believe you will still need to remove the bracket and possibly cut away some of ducts in there (already had done it, so i dont know). here are a few pics. odd, my center console looks a lot like Jim's

Good post.
I've got one of those flush mount kits in my kitchen. For $6 from Sounddomain, you can't go wrong, and it's definately a lot easier than a custom kit.
Since he's even got the same deck, this will provide a good comparison between a pre-made kit, and a home made kit. Keep in mind that if you can't do this yourself, you can expect to pay PLENTY at a shop. For the cost and the effort, those flush mount kits can't be beat. You can see in my pics that with a custom setup like mine, you've got to build the mounting plate, and the trim plate. The scoche kit is basically a bolt-in as long as you've got enough room behind the radio.
I've still got to shim that wood plate to move it back more, which will help the face of the radio sit closer to flush. Since I chose a radio that doesn't have a completely flat face, no matter what I do I can't get it totally flush.
And updated with my new deck and ABS trim ring:

the scosche kit is at sound domain and its around $5. the part number is GM1516. there is another piece to the kit included that i might check out. it would be used instead of the silver trim ring that is around my face now. i deffinately do like how close your panel hugs the face. really nice work. my cutting skills are still in the works, so i'm sticking with this for now

fired up the deck tonight for the first time. wow do i love it. most of my cd collection as been ripped by LAME and EAC. gotta love high quality VBR mp3s. now, if my cds in my car get stolen, it doesnt matter cause they're all mp3s. and its also nice to only have to carry around a dozen cds instead of 100+

I doubt that I'll ever even try the MP3 function. Being on dial up has its drawbacks, and I've already burned my favorite MP3 files into audio cds. The only reason that I bought the 909 over the 707 was because I wanted the 4 volt outputs and the dvd player compatibility.

ok, got a few more shots of the kit, now with the additional trim ring (which does look pretty good jim ). so, i do recommend using this kit if you dont mind doing a few modifications to the console (removing metal bracket behind deck and possibly shaving/cutting the lower console heating ducts).

and probably the last i also highly recommend using vinyl dye. my center console looks beautiful now that i hit it with a couple of light coats. it also doesnt run like normal rattle can stuff, so you cant mess it up

yeah, its a B7M megashifter and its for an auto. it takes some getting used to and the install was a PITA to say the least. Jim, i dont remember what brand it was but it was in rattle can form at Advance Auto. should be able to find similar at any part store. i dont think you want to use primer with this kind of stuff just because its a dye, not paint. this stuff kinda seems into the material, not just sits on top. i'm very pleased with the results. the biggest change i noticed was on the plastic pieces in the front fender wells. went from light gray (faded) to black in a coat or so. anything that wasnt dark enough for me now is

i flushed my Pioneer 9400 in my GTA by simply cutting the plastic bracket that used to support the rear of the factory deck.. And you don't 'need' it, as the factory will still bolt back up fine..

I think the metra kits come with a flush mount option too. I should try some of that vinyl dye, I need to match up all the plastic colors again too. It seems like everything in the car fades a little bit different.

nice lookin installs you two. here's an idea- how about a spring-loaded hinge to keep the stock faceplate on there? on second thought that might be a little annoyying sometimes. but if you could make it so you can see the screen through the stock faceplate it would be awesome. do those stereos come with remotes? if so, thats what i would try and attept somehow. just my .02!!! :hail:

yeah, these decks come with remotes, but they are IR, so the deck has to be line-of-site with the remote. so kinda out of the question, but good idea. one of my next big projects is to put in a 4th gen dash. when i get around to that, the JVC is going to go where the passenger airbag was/is, that way its hidden, and accessible when needed. with the good deck outta the way, i can shove a stock deck where it belongs in the dash and voila! real deck in view, other deck hidden, one more step to complete stealth
