Is this a good combonation?
I decided to go ahead and pick up some bass while I am waiting for Jim to get his kick panel project done.
I am looking for sound quality more than anything, and I really don't need my music to be able to play at 120db at any time.
That said, I've heard good things about Infinity's Perfect subs and their Kappa Perfect 10.1 looks like a good choice for my tastes. It is also relatively cheap at $149.99 at crutchfield.com (I'm sure it would be cheaper elsewhere anyway).link
I don't know much about how to match things up as far as amps and subs go, so I basically just looked up an amp that has about the same RMS power rating as the sub.
I matched the Infinity sub with an Alpine MRD-M301 amp that 175W x 1 @ 4ohm (350W x 1 @ 2ohm). It looks to be a good amp for the price and since it's from Alpine, I feel pretty confident that it will deliver the power it claims to. $200 at crutchfield.com. link
Is this a good combonation, and more important, will these two peices work together? Crutchfield lists the sub as 4-ohm but it also lists a similiar amp (Perfect 10.1d) with dual voice coils and it works at 2-ohm. Not sure what this means but the two subs are identical except for that (even the price is the same).
Thanks for the help.

Youre only gonna be getting about 150 watts or less out of that amp since the sub is a 4 ohm svc. You should look into the Alpine Type-R, I got mine off of ebay for about $100 and they have the new Type-R on there also, the sound quality is decent and they require a little bigger box but not that much. Id get a Dual 4-ohm subwoofer and then wire it down to 2 ohms if I were you that way youd get the best power out of the amp.

Hmm, I don't know about the Alpine subs. I've read that they aren't that good for sound quality on numerous car audio forums, including this one.
I'm still kind of confused on the ohm issue. Should I look for a subwoofer that is 2-ohm, or should I buy an amp that would power the sub I picked out at 4-ohm? If I remember correctly, I read somewhere that 4-ohm equipment requires more power but generally has less distortion than 2-ohm equipment. Is this true?
You also mentioned that you'd get a "dual 4-ohm subwoofer", is that the same thing as a dual 4-ohm voice coil subwoofer? The Infinity Perfect 10.1d is exactly the same as the sub I posted before, except it boasts dual 4-ohm voice coils. How would I go about wiring it to work at 2-ohms?
Thanks again for the help.

Well a subwoofer that is 2-ohm would work also. For an amp to power a 4-ohm sub it would have to put out about twice as much power at 4-ohm then 2-ohm to get the same level of power.

Yeah its the same DVC is dual voice coils and heres wiring diagram for wiring a DVC 4-ohm to 2-ohms.

ya ive heard nothing but good things about alpine. However Ive heard that infinity perfects arent so hot...Then again Ive never heard either at full potential.
Hint best buy will deff. underpower their subs so dumbasses dont send a 1000watt RMS amp(like they have one. ) to a 100 watt RMS sub. anyway.
Id say match up the Alpine amp with a DVC type-R and a nice alpine head unit and speakers then you could say. My stereo is complete alpine. LOL Just kidding. Do whatever you want. But seriously everyone here says. "alpine rox"

It's only what I've read. I've never listened to their subs myself.
In any case, I just want to be sure I'll have the highest quality sound possible out of whatever subs and speakers I end up getting. Any of you guys have any suggestions on what subs are well known for sound quality?
