4x6" Who hates them?

IMO I would like to find the engineer who developed this size speaker and beat him senseless. This has always been my opinion on these speakers, and only through working in car audio have I had experiences to quantify my standings. Don't get me wrong, plates i do not consider 4x6". But unless you put the band aid of all band aids on them, in the form of a bass blocker(makes me quiver to even type it) you end up with a blown speaker. I have come to the conclusion that it is in the overall design and/or dynamics of the way the speaker works, in some cosmic physicist way, that kills them. I have never heard a set that had any depth, range, or real world application other than to fit a hole.

Sorry for the rant, with all the other guys here that are in the field I thought i'd toss this out and see what you guys feel.

I picked up a set of 6x9 bose speakers from the JY for $5, sound is awsome and the only complaint is from the people who happen to sit in the back seat telling me to TURN IT DOWN!

lmao this past weekend me and my bro and a friend went down to georgia southern university for the weekend. and my brother who is about 6 feet tall, and his head was hitting the headliner the whole way, and he had to sit in the back seat and he didnt say a word the whole way down there, which was about 2 and 1/2 hours. but when we got there i asked him why he was being so quiet and he said he couldnt hear anything. we kept talking in the front seat and he would nod so i thought he could hear us.... lol. but ya those speakers are right there by the passenger, i havent rode back there but im sure it would be very loud and probably annoying.

You got that right, I dont think Camaros or Firebirds were meant to carry passengers in the back seat They should have utilized that area for something more usefull!

4x6" speakers

I put in a set of Kaption Audio 4x6's and they have been very good. I installed them two years ago and they still have a nice crisp sound.

mine sadly never worked...just gave static. When I took my car into aspen sound they recommended the inserts I have in my footwells now...so I really don't have much opinion on the 4x6's as I've not heard them much.

Though the ones I had in the rear sail panels did sound decent (yes they were 4x6's...4x6's with a bass tube)

I agree... I also used to work in the car audio industry. If you listen to a 4x6 and then put on the same manuf 4" speaker, the 4" speaker sounds SO much better (although, still not great). The 4x6's have always sounded tinny to me. So I just run 6.5 comps

my camaro had 2 types of 4x6s, factories and Polkaudios. The factories where pertty bad, but lasted since 92 up to 2000-2001. And had the polkaudios since then, only complant i have is the driver side hits the plastic so if it hits hard enought then it vibrates the plastic.

If i wasn't mounting them under the dash i would go bigger, otherwise i like to hide things inside the car.

i got clarion 4x6 2 way i only use them for the highs and a little mids which they do sound decent somehow a lot better than stock i must say. Subs solved the problem of lacking bass and so did my clarion 6x9s in the sails.

people now get headaches in my car.

I've got a set of Infinity Kappa 4"s in there because I already had them from when I had in my mustang. I've got a xover built into my Pioneer deck but they still sound ugly and I've got MTX comps in rear so its not optimal. Once I get my sub in I'm hoping it improves alot.

Yeah, it definately sucks to ride in the back of a third gen. Most people who ride in my backseat tell me the worst part of it is having no room, but compared to some cars that I have driven in (for example, a newer model Eclipse), it's relatively spacious. Loud music directly at your ears was definately the worst part of riding in my bud's Camaro before I got my car. A reasonable sound level in the front of the car sounds twice as loud, if not more, in the back. For example, if I have the HU at 10, it sounds more like 19 or 20 in the back.

I am running inexpensive MA Audio 4x6 and 6x9's amped through my Alpine V12.
I have no real complaints, sound is pretty clean when played loud and I've got a small Kenwood selfpowered 10" sub for the low end.

I have a set of Pioneer 4x6's up front. I think they are like 25-35 watts rms and work perfectly with the rms rating off of my Pioneer deck. When used alone and the car isnt running or moving, you can feel them, and they get really loud before distorting too. I also have Infinity 6x9's in the rear's, and a 12" Infinity Sub sitting in the well. All around, really great sounding set up for roughly $500 including 400watt amp. My 4x6's are 3-wats and I love them. Only thing I dislike is that I wish I had waited and gotten some Infinity 4x6's. I had always wanted a full Infinity setup, but had the money and needed some 4x6's. don't really regret it though.

eh the 4x6 kappa plates don't even sound all that good either... the highs just tear at your ears...

now I have components in the doors (from the factory,) and I have the horrible problem with blocking the tweeter... it's horrible... I still think the best place for the tweeter is high up on the door... even IF it's further from the woofer....

I think my stock components sound better, mid-bass-wise, but they lack in the highs... I think this is because I'm using a TAPE adapter for my ipod... but hey...

I also have the 4x6 kappa's along with 6.5 kappa components and 2 mtx 12' subs. I lowered the bass on my stereo and put it on my sub amp and I got a very good sound. But will soon upgrade to components all the way around. Might keep the 4x6 as tweeter.

I think I like the sound from up high... off the dash or high in the doors... your arms/legs/passengers just block the sound too much... almost unbearable...

at least when I put in all my aftermarket stuff again, I can crank it so loud, it won't matter if it's blocked or not..

Yea, I prefer the speakers up in the dash myself. You get the sound bouncing off of the windshield right at you. My front speakers can get too loud to where it hurts.

all i have for highs is a 400 dollar set of alumapro ALC 6.2 components off a diamond d5 600.2 in some fiberglass kickpanels. they sound incredible, and get more than loud enough to be heard clearly over a pair of 12's with over 2000 watts rms on em.

you can tell a slight difference with someone riding shotgun, but nothing major.

yeah but your own arms and legs block the tweeter on your side... at least in every car with kickpanels that I've been in, that has been true...

Maybe if I got a set of those 'imaging' tweeters that you see on CDT's website... put them on the dash, maybe that would even things out...

i still have my 4x6 in dash. when i had the rest of my audio system installed i had bass blockers put on the front speakers as they were the only thing left stock. they've held up for 3 years now and counting. and they even sound good too

i crank up my music a LOT , alll the time and i've never had problems. i dont know why you guys hate em' so bad. i have 2 6x9 Memphis, and 2 10" Memphis subs cranking out most of my power with the added high end from the 4x6's and i have no problems with it

I don't think I have any problems with any of the sounds (i.e. highs, mids, and lows). I got 3 way 2x4's and 3 way 6x9's. I figure that covers basically anything that I will encounter. Plus, I got the 12" Infinity Sub layin in the back to cover and make up for any bass the other 4 miss.

In all three of my 3rd gens, I've removed the 4x6's and put in 5.25 components. The 5.25 will fit in the 4x6 holes with absolutely no problems, I put the tweeter's on the A-pillar at about head height. Works great... I say bump up to 5.25's... no custom work what so ever.

Possible. If your gonna do components, get 6x8 adaptor plates and get something like the Alpine Type R 6x8 Components(we sell them at Best Buy!). 6x9's are bigger and have more potential for sound, especially when you put an amp on them, heck I ran a 2-channel Alpine amp for a while... only on the 6x9's. You can get some pretty nice 4x6's in the dash, but if you can convert to bigger, I'd recommend, and I know 5.25's will fit in the dash without modification.

a lot of people will tell you to stay the hell away from 6x9s.... but I loved the way my 150wrms 4-way 6x9s sounded... especially when you actually feed them 150 watts...

Exactly! That's why I said they have much more potential. When you feed them proper power, 6x9's can sound unbelievable! You can make those thing sound nearly like two low powered 10" subs... if you wanted bass.

eh, yeah, SOME 6x9s can do that... but not in OUR cars... I put my 6x9s in an old buick, over the truck rear shelf... hooked up the subwoofer amp, and the amp for the highs (two inputs,) and it sounded as good as about two 10's, but I'd say they sounded cleaner... smaller moving mass... not that the mass really matters... kind of an urban myth..

Got any pics of this setup, during or after the install?

My Boy Bull! Nah, I haven't done the components in this new Camaro yet, after all I just got the car. We had some left over 5.25 Kenwood's in the garage, so I slapped those in to replace my factory 4x6's. When I get some new 5.25 components, I'll do a step-by-step with pictures. The only kind of modification that I think anyone would have to do is shave just a little off the underside of the dash(its just a bunch of foam stuff). Just gotta shave around where the speaker is and your good to go. All depends on the depth of your 5.25's... like the Kenwood's I put in went in without a problem, but in my last '91 Camaro, I had to shave down because the magnet took up a lot of room. I'll get something going for you kids... when I get some darn money (but ya gotta love the Best Buy discount!)

Step by step would be awesome, man. I'm also interested in seeing how the tweeter is mounted.

So, the 5.25s sound much better than the 4x6s?

4x6's vs 5.25's... I'd definately say the 5.25's, they have more potential for sound quality, and you'll generally always find a wider selection of 5.25's compared to 4x6's. You don't have to do the components, just upgraded to 5.25's would be great. As for the tweeters, I drilled a small hole behind the tweeter mount, then ran the wires under the dash and up the A-Pillars and through the hole, where I then wired up the tweeter's and mounted them... actually a fairly simple install.

Are the mounting holes for the 5.25s in the same spot as the 4x6s?

You'll only be able to 'properly' screw the 5.25 in with two 4x6 holes. The dash also sits on top of the 5.25 which helps in securing the speaker. I've never had a problem with my 5.25's coming loose in any of my Camaro's, I only screw the 5.25 in with two screws and it's good to go.

hell, even the kappa plates had problems with all four screws going in...

it would be pretty cool to see some real components in the dash... never even heard of that before... maybe someone can make that step-by-step a sticky...

That's awesome I was just browsing to see what anyone has done about those crappy 4x6's. I replaced the 4x6's in my old S-10 with some pioneer 4x6's and HATED them. I actually think I liked the factory ones better. I never got the sound I was looking for. Anything low sounded distorted and anything high sounded tinny. I'm definitely looking into this 5.25" idea.

Haha, I just did it as a simple way to upgrade my sound quality... especially with the components. Ya'll got me pumped now, I wanna use this as an excuse to buy my speakers early(though I got no dough) and get something wrote up for ya. Gimme another paycheck and we'll see what I can come up with. If ya really want, I can go through the whole process with the old Kenwood 5.25's I found in the garage and put in my car... components will require a little more explanation and details.

the 5.25 coaxials really don't need a write-up... the components are what are intriguing... I wanna know how you mount them/angle them/etc

I agree, the shape of the cone doesn't exactly help the sound

I had Pioneer Premier speakers in the front and rear. They sounded decent, but no comparison to other cars with 5.25 or 6.5 in the front!

BACK FROM THE DEAD! well... only a couple months

hey im about to do this. I think the position as scrap maker is talking about for the 5.25 is assumed to be normal. How else are you goign to mount them right? But the tweeter is what i think were both wondering about. Should i plcae them facing the head rest of both seats and have or should i aim them to the middle of teh car? Any suggestions.

This may be easier than waiting for JIm to get his kicks going again and may sound nearly as good. Probably not though.
