Ok I’m adding Subwoofer to my car and I would like to know what is the best maker of subwoofers in your opinion. I'll be adding dual 10".

Re: Best Subwoofers

depends on your sound prefrence i my self have 2 alpine type r's powered by a hifonics brutus BXi 1206D connected to my alpine 9885 headunit

also got an older alpine 4 channel amp powering my kick 5.25 infinity reference comp's (older but sound great) i use pioneer 4x6's and 6x9's with base blockers so i can REALLY crank the music up

but in simple terms short theres no best anything

all comes down to what you like

i listen to alot of rock and little rap and it sound great for both

Believe it or not, Wal-mart has pretty descent stuff, You can get 2 pioneer 10's for (I think) 40-50 Bucks each, they also sell amps made by lightning audio, or Sony, also try pawn shops for some PUNCH subs...

Re: Best Subwoofers

I posted this also in the electronics section where I first saw this thread....

Memphis MOJO (15-M3MOJO12) 1000 watts RMS, 2000 watts max each. Each has a 128oz magnet and weigh in at 36 pounds!!

I'm running a single 12" in my system and it outperforms the pair of 10" JL 10W6's I had prior.

Re: Best Subwoofers

I have one Alpine type x sub which is 1000 watts rms and 3000 watts peak. That may sound like a sub just made for pounding but it does kick out tight bass. Now it is backed by a mrd-1005 amp and it has an extra battery in the trunk even though it really doesn't need it. I'm also happy with the Type s speakers in front and type r 6x9 in back. Alpine d310 headunit flipscreen takes care of the rest. Also added the Ipod adapter and nav module. All together bought all at once with wiring and install kit and the box, it came to almost $2500. Not bad for what I got and I'm happy. Alpine is the $#!T!

thats a very subjective question. why don't we try narrow it down to what would work best for you

what amp/power are you going to be putting to the subs, this way you can match your subs to your amp

what are your expectations? do you want a spl system, a sound q system, or somewhere inbetween?

Re: Best Subwoofers

^^^^^ LOL klortho's hereagain to suggest bostons.... brisk is right.. you want SQ system, SQL, or pure SPL? i would go with a nice SQL system. If i were you id go with one 10" Fi Q. Doesn't need a whole lot of power and they sound nice and get decently loud

Re: Best Subwoofers

alpine..........not so. You cant't compare a pyle to a JL or a Cerwin Vega stroker no matter how good the install on both is.

RS reaper............it really does matter what you want to accomplish with the sub and your budget. If you are looking for decent quality at a good price there are many choices as everyone has their favourites. Why not try sitting in a few cars and listening for yourself, then decide.

OR...You could go a buy 2 cervin vega 15" dual coil strokers (3.5 cu in box) and hook them up to a 1000w class A competition amp and I guarantee you will blow the back window out (and your ear drums)!

Re: Best Subwoofers

im talking about there no subwoofer out there is the best.each one of them have a downside to them...

no u cant compare pyle to a Cerwin Vega.but it dont mean it can beat it,lets say putting the pyle in the best install and put that vega in the sh*ttiest u could think of.

Re: Best Subwoofers

Brisk hit it right on! Use whats best for you. and ALSO Alpine .

My car sounds like a IMAX theatre. And i didnt "spend a fortune." Technically on paper my subs are supposed to be WEAK!. I went with 3 rockford p1 subs. 2 12" and 1 10"

then to accompany the bass i have the latest rockford 6x9's and 2 infinity component speakers along with 4 top of the line kenwood tweeters.

You gotta remember that technology changes at a rapid pace. I remember back in 1986 (NYC) when the long cadillacs( chrome sillouette chics on the grille) with gold spokes and curb feelers use to come down the block bumpin music. Back then, Pioneer subs were the ticket.

Cerwin vega was used in the stage halls and clubs......Now there a front runner in the car competition scene. --- like 2 years ago Alpines where on top. Rockford was before that. Then when nobody was lookin...Memphis slid into the Competition scene. Is JL really the best speaker? It certaintly not an industry standard.

The point im tryin to make is.....SImply go with what you can afford then just make sure your setup is golden. SOme folks like MORE bass then others.....ITs all Up to you....

just try some local stores in your area with different stereo Equip. EVEN the MOM and pop stores.. Then exclude the bad equipment based upon your opinion. Then whip out the wallet To get your HEAD NODDIN'....

let us know what you go with!

Re: Best Subwoofers

how about this... what are you looking for? SQ? SQL? SPL? what's your budget? are you gonna port the box or seal it? what size subwoofer do you want? how many watts do you want to be pushing? answer all those and it will be easier to narrow it down to what you want

and the install is EVERYTHING. an 91on20's you shouldnt mix subs i.e. 12s and 10s :P

Re: Best Subwoofers

theres lots of rules that SAY what i can and cant do........Im not a audio guru just yet so i'll take your word for it.

But ITS TOO LATE NOW! its already installed....the third hole is cut in my box...

thanks anyways....

opinion here: So my subs dont run off the same amp......THEY are equally matched for power. i.e. One isnt going to over power the other and blow.

I understand the rules of a box. My box is sealed in one section and ported in another ALSO modified to balance the bass-blows for all three "mixed" rockfords in the same box.

you guys are welcome to listen to my equipment anytime.....bring a dvd too!

you port any decent sq/sql oriented 10 in your camaro and your hatch is going to do the rest if i was you i would go with a ported 10 tuned to like 35 htz or higher but it also depends on what kind of music you like

Dang then my competition rig was wrong, I had 16 15's with 10's and 8's in the doors, it helped balance the sound.

Re: Best Subwoofers

currently i'm working with kenwood tri-tweeter speakers all around and two 10" Alpine type R woofers witha 2000 watt amp.....i personally would like to have gotten the type X's that i had my eye on (one type x is equivalent to two type r's in power and price (300 i believe)) but the people who had these woofers said if i put two in the backof my car, the back window might blow out, i dont know if this is true or not but either way i didnt have the money for them lol

the only place to get memphis's are at the audio shops themselves. IMO the street edges are the best cheap sub that ive heard in a long time.

Re: Best Subwoofers

I don't know if these are the best but I've got a pair of 10" Earthquake shallow mount subs. They're only 3 or 4 inches deep. I used to have a big heavy box with a pair of JL Audio 8" subs. I'm just glad I never had a flat. I would've had to pull the box out to get to the spare. As it is now, the shallow mounts take up very little room, are much lighter, and I can get to the spare without having to move or remove anything. Plus the bass is nice and tight. And they sound louder and better than the JL Audio's I used to have. But in the end, it's a matter of personal preference.

Re: Best Subwoofers

start with a budget of what you want to spend. and go from there. i have a jl audio 10w7 in my iroc and it cost me around 500 bucks , and about another 500 just to power the sub.but it hits harder then most people with 2 12's....lol. just decide on what you want to spend and go from there.

Re: Best Subwoofers

you want top of the line go with JL audio, the w7s are THAT DAMN good. Good secondary would be kicker's L7s. The L7s would probably be the best bang for your buck, but it all depends on your budget, listen to different systems and get a feel for the level of bass you are really looking for

most of it was from wal-mart hehe.
the woofer is a 12" sony xplod woofer. got one of wal-marts subwoofer install kits, one of the 12" sub box kits, and i bought a MTX amp. so far i love it. but i have the box sitting on the driver side seat because it doesnt fit in the back trunk area space haha.

Re: Best Subwoofers

I have two Rockford Fosgate P310d4's in my 89 RS powered by a Rockford Fosgate p650.2 and these things are really powerfull. I like 10" better than 12" too because 12" sounds groggy and 10" are crisp clean sound. the Amp was tested and it's 734watts RMS and the Subs are 800watts each. Didn't even take two months to blow my alternator. But now I threw in a 2.4 farad capasitor and now I know my alternator wont blow again.

capacitors don't take much stress off the alternator. sorry for you're misconception on that. It helps just to keep the current high for the amp for storage. It don't hold enough charge like a battery to help the alternator. You may blow it again so if you do go to an upgrade alternator.

im bout to receive 2 rf p3 also going with a hifonics 1206d to power them..but that cap is not really doing much, once ur subs hit a big note.that cap is already drained and cant never fully recharge.so that going to put more stress on the alt it self trying to recharge and still power ur amp all at the same time.

if u dont wanna buy a h/o alt u could always do these things first.get a deep cycle battery and do the big 3 that should help alot..

Re: Best Subwoofers

I am new to this but I figured I would let you know that I am putting in a 15" Rockford Fosgate T2 sub, with an alpine radio, and a 1500 watt Rockford amp, into my 1986 camaro. yeah its not much but it has a lot of punch to it. The shop that is going to make the box for it and install it is one of my good friends. I am gonna also be adding in another set of 5 or 6 inch speakers to the trunk in the box that run off a 200 watt amp. actually all my interior speakers are gonna run off an amp or 2. when they make the box I will have him draw up the specs and dimensions for me and I will post it up for everyone. I will also post up there store's site if you have any questions.

The best battery that I have found to work good is the GEL cell battery. if you want power then go with the yellow top, and dont buy a new alternator go to an auto/elec shop and have them re spool it for you its cheaper.

Re: Best Subwoofers

How about those generic ones at Best Buy? lol! But really, I've used Sony Xplode, JVC, Alpine and Kenwood all to good effect. ~shrug~ They all seem good enough for me. =)

Infinity is still good equipment, the Kappa sub you mentioned is a very nice sub. Not the top of the line, things have changed ALOT in the past few years, but they're still good quality units.

Re: Best Subwoofers

Got $400 to spend get 2 10" Type X, 2000watt rms all together. I have have 2 12" Type R great subs but i want more! My sig explains the detail. Stay away from Sony especially their decks. My Alpine subs blow anything Sony makes away. JL its also a great choice not the cheapest in the world. Alpine 10" Type Rs are very cheap on ebay like $100 a piece shipped.

Re: Best Subwoofers

Almost anything will sound good in the hatch of a third gen...thanks to that funnel effect you can get great sound with underpowered systems in our cars. However, I prefer Punch/Rockford and Kicker subs to all others. I have had everything from Pyle to JL, JBL, Sony, Alpine, Infinity, Pioneer, and some others that basically are nameless nobody brands and the Kicker are great followed by Punch/Rockford because of their price for the quality. My '94 Trans-Am had Punch 12's and Kicker Solo-Baric 12's and both sounded awesome running off the same amp. However, the Punches were cheaper by far for the sound quality I was getting. I later ran the same Kicker's off a 1000 watt Matt's Audio amp though and they were in a truck...sounded even better. The Punches would have exploded on that amp though.

Basically what I am saying is the Punches gave me great sound for less money because the required less power to sound great partially thanks to the design of the car's hatchback.

Re: Best Subwoofers

I had punch for awhile but I wasnt to fond of them. I blew them to often, I got tired of sending them out and waiting on there return. SO I bought a rockford T2 15" that can hold 5000 watts alone to it and run it off a 2000 watt amp. that sucker pounds so hard I am looking on ebay for a non motorized trunk lock cause now my damn truck wont close tightly anymore.
I know I dont have a camaro worth looking at right now, I bought it in pretty poor shape so It is slowly getting restored paycheck by paycheck.
I took the system out for awhile till I put my new shocks in the sub weighs like 75lbs not including box so my *** end of the car was dragging. I might swap over to 2 10 inches rockford P series, not sure yet less weight same pound.

Oh yeah those no name brands are horrible, they last for about a week then go on you. watch out for subs at auto stores they over price them sometimes lie to you about the sound quality. but the subs I miss the most are my 10" diamond audio they were nice but pricey.

Not to change the subject or hijack the thread, but real quick, if the rear of the car sags it wouldn't be because of shocks. If it is overly bouncy it would be shocks. Otherwise it is probably weak springs in need of replacement causing the sag.
