12" MTX Jackhammer's

Circuit City is having a deal, buy 1 MTX Jackhammer get one free. My question is, are these decent subs for the price?

http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/MTX-J...oductDetail.do

I have a Pioneer 4900iB Head Unit, and I plan on 2 12" Subs (These if you guys approve) in a custon box for the well that I'll build. I already have 3x5's (Dont know the brand) in the dash, they were already in there when I bought the car. I plan on 6x9's for the rear quaters, but dont know for sure what yet. I wasn't going to buy the amp/amps til I had my Subs and Speakers, but your input would be appreciated.

woooww... I really hope you have a bigger checkbook then $500 o.o
if you want the good subs, they are usally more then that..
But dont take by my word, I could be wrong,
I payed like $500 for my two subs and amp, we had to make the sub box for my car, and they still are sh*tty subs. (sony xplods... I got them before I knew they were really crappy)
but this summer I may get new ones.
but I got no ideas for ya man, basically buy what you can get with your money.

Re: 12" MTX Jackhammer's

me and my dad made the box during the summer, it went well, other then it was always a pain when we had to rewire the subs under the carpet and trying to remeber it hooks up again (I lost the instructions, dumb me ) I dont really have good pics of it other then this one:

we filled up that well area, and I bought new carpet and did the whole back, of course it doesnt match with my origanal carpet (its grey..) but it still looks nice.

sadly Im sure I got screwed over when I bought the sub box's $35 each (these ones were premade and just had to put them together your self. then I had to get the wire kit, and got the compasitor thingy I guess everyone tells me I needed, I ended up got that stolen :-S but nothing else got stolen, so I still dont have that, two subs were like $70 each, and the amp was like $170...
so it was like $460 for just those I named above... :-\

What do you mean how much room do I have to work with?

I myself am pretty good at wood working, and I have my dad and/or shop teacher that could help me build it. I already have the plans to build the box printed, just need to buy the 4x8' MDF and start whenever I get time. I figure $30-50 should cover the costs. And for a box in the well, were should the ports be located? Do you think I'll need any tweeters up front?

Like I said I'd like to spend about $500, but I have no problem spending a bit more on quality products.

Looks decent. That's how I want my custon box to fit in my well, flush with the deck the T-tops sit on. Where and for how much did you get the black carpet for?

Also, how hard do those Xplods hit? They are supposed to suck, but I figured I'd ask.

Few more things lol.

What do you suggest for the two rear 6x9's? And I'd prefer 2 12"s so I could put the amp in the middle, I'm a big symmetric freak lol. What do you suggest if I wanted to go with 2 12" subs than the 1 you suggested? I'd even be fine with 2 10"s if they were good quality.

One more question lol, will I be using just one amp, the 1200 RMS Amp? Or do you suppose I need a smaller amp for my 3x5's and 6x9's aswell?

For the subs, JL audio is what i swear by. They have very very good sound, even the cheapest JL audio subs are very good quality. I got mine a few years ago at a pawn shop with a box for 300$ with an amp.

As for the amp, 1 amp should be fine. But what cd player are you using?

Yeh, the Pioneers build in amp will be plenty for all your front speakers. Just go grab whatever 12in JL's you can afford and a decent amp, I got a Rockford and its doing good.

Yeah, I liked how that is set up, its just the chances of something dropping on top of the subs are pretty high and risky, unless you dont really keep anything big and will hurt them.

I also have T-top on my car too, I put the tops in the bag and let sit against the amp, and leaning up, and that is pretty good, it just blocks your rear veiw mirror, but thats not a problem.

I bought my carpet at a place called grove's carpet, some little company around this town that only sells carpet, and I dont remeber how long and how wide I got, but it was about $40, if that is you have the carpet go down behind the back seats and let them lay there.

and yes, my explods dont hit very good, I hate it, because I ride around in my friend's camaro, and they would have a different brand of subs and amp, but smaller watts then mine (I got 1100 watt sub, (two subs) and a 1000 watt amp.) and thier's still ALOT better then mine.

Re: 12" MTX Jackhammer's

ok i been gone for a while LOL..... that 1200rms amp cant be used as a 6x9 amp only subs way to much power for any componets lol

a quality HU can take care of the speakers no problem as for suggestions on spekers i was running power bass stuff (ok i guess not a good idea to run on my amp p450.4 too much power and ending up burning them up, off the HU they should be fine)

what i mean by how much room do you have is how big an enclosure can you build with 2 12s the min i would run is 4cubes thats me I like low low low BASS

my single 15 i have 5 cubes so

but you can gt away with 3cubes before Port dislacment.... if your good with calculating volume try to fugure how to fit around 4-5 cubes then you will be great

Im telling you get that audioque amp (best amp per watts for the money NEW)

i love symetrics too i can understand lol....

but mess with FI btw all those prices are shipped...

get 2 12"q with the audioque amp and youll be good email scott on FIcaraudio and hell help you out

Re: 12" MTX Jackhammer's

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the JBL GTO's, or the new MTX Jackhammers. They're not DD, or TC Sound subs but they're perfectly serviceable subwoofers. Don't fall for the elitist talk, those subs are decent and with a proper amp they'll make you happy. I would NEVER buy a mainstream sub at retail price but I would pick them up buy one get one free all day and give them to my friends without batting an eye. Spend the money on your enclosure first, your deck second, and your amp third. Finally put a nicely mated subwoofer in your enclosure and you should be happy with it. If you're not going for SPL most any good brand subwoofer will fill your car with enough bass to make you happy.

Thanks for the info, I'll look into buying those MTX's if they still have that deal going on. I want enough bass to be heard a few blocks away, I dont need people hearing me 1/2 mile away lol.

That's great yours is pretty good man
I tune it my self, and others who knows what thier talking about when it comes to subs and tuning them, said I did it all right, I guess I want a little more hitting and low bass. but oh well, Im pretty picky, but there be days when I disconnected the battery and forget that everything needs to be tuned on my cd player. so I guess they are pretty good, I just need to retune before I assume again. also I dont have a compassitor or whatever they called them, I do know I need one of those, because sometimes the car gets that dimming when I have it a little too loud, but I dont listen to music as loud anymore, its been hard enough on my ears that my car is pretty loud too.

They don't have that deal going on anymore from what I can see. I'll hold off for now, they are bound to run the special again. I have my eye on the 450W Max/225W RMS instead of the 300W/150W RMS now.

I know its possible, I just have to look for the deals. The car already has aftermarket 4x6's so I'm leaving them for now, I got my head unit and Ipod Cable already ($160 for both), I bought all the wiring and started to run it two days ago (About $40), I bought 6x9's two days ago ($75), and now I just need to decide on what amp/s I want to go with and what subs. I'll build the box afterwards, which will run me about $40 to build. I'm looking at spending about $650-750 altogether is what it's looking like, which isn't too bad I guess.

Wow, Just f*ckin chill dude.
I know I got a shitty deal, and went with some "not-so-great" subs and amp, but so what?
I could care less because I like them, and who ever got a ride in my car likes them.
And that's great you waste your money on all speakers, I raither be using that money a useful part for my engine, or a new pair of tires.
