has anyone ever had their subs fixed
I have three JL 10's, 2 of them have ripped/rotted surrounds and the other one is seized up.they are about ten years old and just to much sun over the years.they were $250 a piece back then plus I love tight hitting they are. just trying to get some dollar amounts seeing how the only authorized repair place around here is pricey to say at least.

Re: has anyone ever had their subs fixed
Kenwoods old 10" subs from the early '90s had weak surrounds that tore easily. They were built with realitivly good hardware except for the surrounds, which you could get replacement foam surrounds back then for $10-$12 each, but having them replaced by a certified manufacturer's repair facility usually added about $30 each. I did this several times over the years and was always satisfied that I had. JL Audio speakers from the late '90s were a far supiorer grade of materials than the earlier Kenwoods, I would say that it really depends on wether the surrounds are truely still available or not and what condition the vioce coils are in now that they are aged in the sun. The new speakers on the market today are even better but when cost is the major factor then repairing them just might be the way to go.
Personally I would recommend getting new subs, you could have new tunes playing right off the bat verses waiting weeks for the old ones to be shipped off repaired and then shipped back to the dealer.

well I just looked at ikessound and it would be about $875 and about $780 off ebay for 3 10w6v2 shipped to my door. that's way more than I wanted (and can afford) to spend right now.

Having the surrounds replaced on your old woofers is still a feasable option, but I have a feeling the one you described as seized up will turn out to be a fried voice coil, and not be reasonably repairable.
Which models of subs are we talking about needing repaired. JL Audio is a good company but like most, they constantly update their product line. I have an old W3 dual voice coil competion sub, and was suprised when I went to JL's website and found out it was only produced for three years, then they went in an entirely new direction with their technologies and designs, even though this model was at the time, their most successful competion speaker.
Their website has a phone number for their tech line on it , I suggest giving them a call. I have talked to one of their tech's several times back in the day and he was always willing to share a ton of great info and time to my calls.

Check them out: http://simplyspeakers.com/
I rebuilt the foam surrounds on two 2 sets of GM factory UQ7 subs using their kit. Came out nice too.

Surrounds are easy... well, not easy, but doable. New cones... not so much.
I did new surrounds on my vintage Bose speakers... you have to get the cone PERFECTLY centered or it won't work!

Re: has anyone ever had their subs fixed
thanks, I would of never to thought of looking for replacement surrounds online. I did find a pair on ebay just for the 10W6's so I think I'll just fix the two and build a box for the truck and trash the third one. although I did get it to move but it's still binding up.

Re: has anyone ever had their subs fixed
I fixed two of my subs myself. Bought the right size rubber surround but a little tougher than the original. the place I went to had the right adhesive. One of the posts above mentioned they have to be perfectly centered in order to work. He's right. The adhesive gives you a little bit of time to work it. I did the cone first, let it dry and did the basket side the next day. A few days later, dropped them in the box and they pound to hell. It's been 1 year and they keep pounding.good luck.
