Goodbye Spare, hello stealth Basslink system!

Installed a 10" Basslink sub and an Alpine amp in the spare tire space on my 88 convertible. I was hoping to put the amp under the passenger seat but it was too tight, so I fit them both in there. Leaving the unused stock unit in the dash and going total stealth. I am feeding my ipod directly to the input of the amp and pre-out from the amp to the sub. I plan to connect my portable Sirius receiver as well for variety. Luckily the amp has gain control for the 2 sets of outputs so I can balance front to rear without fader control. The amp also has a hpf so the speakers don't have to strain with the bass and they crank nice and loud without distortion leaving the Basslink to handle the bass. Previous owner had the amp and what looks like nice Alpine speakers installed as well some time ago using the factory stereo as a source. You can control the sound with the ipod eq function, it works pretty well and I like the simplicity and it's sounds really good. The bass is solid, but I'm sure some of it will get lost with the top down at highway speeds, but at least it's decent compared to what factory stock was and the price was right and looks good. I stole the Basslink from my TA as it seems it was made for the 'vert, but they can still be had for around $150. I recommend it for the price and stealth factor. Just have carry a tire repair kit and fix-a-flat with me.

I'd use a thicker gauge of wire....

The system has proper gauge from the battery to the amp, the wires powering the sub connect at the amp and are only 2 feet long.

No, just picked the power off the amp power lug and daisy chained to the sub.

Hmmm..I get the feeling that u are underpowering ur sub...and thats gonna generate DC which is gonna eventually blow it...

I think I have some 8 gauge leftover...If i do u can have it for free...but if not u can order a few runs on ebay for cheap....

BTW not criticizing or anything......just tryin to help

i agree good setup, but you really need to upgrade the wiring... never a good thing when the remote wire is the same gauge as power and ground

Re: Goodbye Spare, hello stealth Basslink system!

Thanks for the tips guys. The sub only draws 20 amps max, I think that wire, 12 ga I think, will handle it fine at that length. I agree it would not be sufficient at longer lengths.

I wonder how well that would fit in a coupe. Do you have to leave the plastics off or can you hide it under the factory trim?

Re: Goodbye Spare, hello stealth Basslink system!

Where do you now put the spare-in the garage?

Granted - I've never used mine. I always carry tire plugs and a pump which have actually helped in a pinch.

I mounted mine on the driver's side to the floor. I have tha back window dark tinted and pull the T-top bag over it to hide it as much as possible. Sounds great though - rounds out the sound of the whole system.

Re: Goodbye Spare, hello stealth Basslink system!

Cool! I'm running a JBL 10" sub box with a integrated amp that is simular to yours in the hatch of my 86 TA. I am running a aftermarket CD deck with the stock factory speakers and my combo sounds not too shabby for the little amount I got invested into my sound system. I like the looks of that Basslink you have there.

Again..not tryin to critizice...I have a cheap distro block u can have for free...that'll reduce the risk of a fire.....also...this might help u see that im not hatin on ur system....on the contrary I wanna help u reduce the change of blowing it due to DC...
