I had to cut the radio pod support for it to slide in deep enough. then i took the trim plate from the deck and cut out the radio trim cover and glued it in with epoxy and then filled in the empty spaces with a bondo putty and sanded it smooth. The carbon fiber is a film made by 3M. let me know what you all think

Re: Double Din (Alpine IVA-W203/P1) in my 87 Formula

Looks good! I don't really dig the Carbon Fiber look, but everything else is top notch, and someone could use a different film, or paint the plate.

I was thinking of doing something similar to install a Pioneer AVIC U310BT because I wanted navigation, but ultimately decided against it and went with a single-DIN. Your photo has given me a little bit of seller's remorse on the Pioneer.

A couple of questions. Did you just have to cut the plastic bracket that sticks up in the center, or did you have to hack into the two heater ducts on each side of the pod? Second, for the plate, can you post a tracing or template of the finished product? Or at least some more detailed photos and descriptions. There are occasionally threads asking about the feasibility of installing a double DIN, and it appears you've done it right.

P.S. Dude, buy some gas! I know it's gotta be winter where you are now just from where your heater lever is.

hahaha I really do need gas! theres WAY to much snow right now to go anywhere.
Yeah im not a huge carbon fiber fan either but its kinda nice. as far as the pod i cut out the plastic middle as close to the heat ducts as possible without removing them and it slid right in. the trim piece i kinda got lucky on, first i cut it so it would fit over the HU, once it fit over that i lined the hole in the HU trim with the hole in the cover and cut the cover so that would fit in and i just used epoxy to bond them. i didnt do it very technical. unfortunately i didnt think to take pix of my progress but its super easy to get it to fit. the U310 is a waste, get a refurbed f900bt off ebay its like $100 more and is far better

Re: Double Din (Alpine IVA-W203/P1) in my 87 Formula

Cool. I actually sold the U310 for exactly what I paid for it (a little less after the PayPal mafia took their cut, but whatever). I originally went with the U310 because I didn't really need DVD playing capability (I have a television in my house for such things) and it was a newer model, but yeah, you're right, the F900BT looks like a good deal. Anyway, no matter now, as the U310 is gone. I decided I'd be better off spending the money on a basic single-DIN that will play my iPod and some brand spanking new speakers.

the alpine i just put in has nav and bluetooth and ipod which is the main reason i wanted it. and the 6.5 inch screen is great for the Nav, the DVD is mostly a bonus. Id say thats a good call on new speakers and such. i hope to soon get 6.5 components for the front and the rear, the place near me has a deal right now for buy one get one free speakers =)

Hey man that looks awesome! excellent job! I have an /////Alpine W205/Blackbird II which I was going to try and put in my 91 Z28, only problem I think my radio mount lower in the center console then on the firebird/trans ams. I have an older /////Alpine IVA-D310 single din flip out monitor I'm going to put in the Z28, only PITA with that one is the brain mounts under the seat or where ever.

But after seeing yours I have food for thought here on maybe going in the same direction,

Thanks

Is a Formula radio trim bigger than a Trans am? Because it looks like a Ddin wont kit in mine.

GM uses 1 1/2 DIN, what the OP did was a custom job (really good looking one by the way). You will have to do some trimming and cutting to get it to work, but it is doable as shown. Looking to do something similar myself once the 4th gen dash is in place....

Re: Double Din (Alpine IVA-W203/P1) in my 87 Formula

I custom made the trim by cutting a stock one and then epoxyed in the ddin radio trim and then just filled and sanded smooth. It came out nice and is a very tight fit. I actually just sold that stereo, the nave dissent work very well and I never used it. Replaced it with the pioneer MVH-P8200bt, was on sale at best buy for like $250 (normally 329) it's way better, only single din, but Im gonna get a mount for my iPad for nav and video and stuff. I'll post a few pics of the new stereo in a few.

Re: Double Din (Alpine IVA-W203/P1) in my 87 Formula

here is my new HU the Pioneer MVH-P8200BT. the 4v preamps make the sound quality 100 times better than the alpine's 2v. 1 pic is of the HU and the other is the BT mic which works great even with the tops off =)
