Popup 7inch in-dash touchscreens
I have seen the Lilliput GL701-NP/C/T and XENARC 700IDT, but really hoping there are some cheaper or at least more reliable alternatives I am just not finding.
Both seem pretty expensive and the Xenarc doesn't work automatically from what I have read. I have also seen a ton of complaints about both not being high build quality.
So does anyone have any alternatives for a 7inch touchscreen fitting in a 1.5Din with out cutting?

have you checked around on mp3car.com? that's one of the most informative sites i've come across when i've been looking for car pc equipment info. but lilliput and xenarc seem to be the best routes from everything i've been able to find (if you're not looking to modify stuff). you could also look hope to build my own sometime in the next year, but we'll see

Thanks for the reply.
I have been checking it out some but I fear you are correct that those are the best if not only commercially available options.
Really I am surprised at how limited the options are, more options are always helpful. I read a few builds on MP3car.com that people built there own, I may give that a try if nothing else turns up before it is time to make a decision.

gotta realize that the car pc is still a very niche market, so choices are limited for polished products. but if you're not going for a flip out, look into some of the used commercial point of sale (POS) screens that pop up on ebay. atms, register, kioske, etc use touche screens and some of em are easy to play with and are cheap to try out

The car PC is actually a greater possibility than you think.
Look into the Mini ITX form factor. I am sure you are not shooting at playing Crysis in your car at 60FPS, so display included you could probably build a neat setup for $1000 - $1500.
I can't remember the name, but they make mini ITX cases specifically designed for auto use. The whole case acts as a big heatsink. The design looks similar to the MSD digital 6 boxes and is about the size of an xbox 360 IIRC.

Yeah I had seen options for the actual computer part. In fact I will likely use an Intel Menlow platform motherboard, they generally speaking come with onboard GPS, touchscreen controller, Bluetooth, Wifi, and enough power to run Windows 7. They are also very cool running and seem to meet at least some basic environmental operating conditions that could be found in cars..
They are designed for ultra portable computers like the Viliv S5 etc so then a cheap case would be easy enough. Especially if I am going to have to make my own popup touch screen.

You can try crutchfield. They tell if mods are needed and any other ideas you might want to do.

Re: Popup 7inch in-dash touchscreens
While I did install a carputer and 8" touch screen in my '88 IROC, the monitor is fabbed into the radio/HVAC bezel. (HVAC relocated). Another option to consider is a unit like the Kenwood KVT-51x. (I installed a 512 in my 2004 S-10.)
Although my KVT-512 has some limitations wrt size of drive and number of files accessible, it is an excellent alternative to the carputer.
Look into the KVT-516.

Would especially like to just see it installed what it looks like.
Did you use any tutorial or anything?

i don't know why my signature isn't appending (show my signature is checked), but it has a link to my iroc pages, which details various aspects of the carputer installation.
to quickly summarize the project: i made a mold of the original Lilliput bezel with silicone rubber, and epoxied the resin duplicate and a slimline dvd case into the radio/hvac bezel. i've not yet finished fabbing the s-10 overhead console, which houses the removable stereo faceplate. the mini-itx motherboard, the stereo chassis, and hd-radio tuner are in the hatch area of the camaro. the 4-channel amp and distribution block are in the spare tire area.
check out the fab and worklog sections of the mp3car forums for a wealth of information.

Re: Popup 7inch in-dash touchscreens
i just bought mine (literally 2 nights ago) so i'm not sure yet, i'll get pics of it as soon as i get it installed.
I have about 800 invested in my entire Lanzar sound system. (GPS touch screen head unit, 3000W amp, 12 farad capacitor, Crossover (which also fits in the dash, its getting mounted under the head unit), 3 way replacement speakers for all the factory speakers, and 2 10 inch subs...
