added CB radio, would like speakers on a switch, coming from 2 sources

dont know if my title makes any sense, but i installed a cb, and the speaker and controls are on the mic opposed to on the box. i have 2 aux inputs in my deck, one front, and one back. in a previous car, i would plug the cb into the aux, and the sound was horrid coming out of all 4 speakers.

the only way i can think of doing this, would be to add 2, or 3 switches on the dash, to turn off the back speakers (and maybe front psngr side speaker) when i am focusing on radio. thats easy as pie to do.

which brings me to my challenge.... i would like to have the front speakers run off 2 sources, so i could have tunes in the back, and trucker jive in the front, same time. but since the controls are on the mic, on not on a control box like most, the only way i could think of accomplishing this would be to add an additional deck with aux, since i dont have speaker wires from the cb to access. sure, i could run wire from the mic speaker... allllllll the way down the curly mic coil, and seal the cable back up. but i dont plan on going that far for it.

so i know there are very few with CB's these days, and if you do have one hooked up in any sort of way with a stereo, let me know.

i would like to avoid all switches in this, i think they are tacky, especially if they are for turning speakers on and off. and i dont plan on installing a second deck for just a cb.

Re: added CB radio, would like speakers on a switch, coming from 2 sources

I think you're making this too difficult, what kind of cb do you have? Most cb's have their own speaker, that's pretty damn loud. If that doesn't work, most guys i know run a seperate set of speakers for their cb. It's not like you need big speakers for a cb, or expensive ones for that matter.

I'm reinstalling my CB, but Im hiding it in my center console this time around, oh and Im putting my antenna under my rear bumper laying on its side so it cant be seen.

Mine has the speaker on it but with yours couldn't you just install some cheap tweeters? I think one tweeter off of ebay would do the job

Re: added CB radio, would like speakers on a switch, coming from 2 sources

Could use a relay, I guess you'd need one for each side (R & L), and a single switch.

Name:  relaytext2b.gif
Views: 27
Size:  2.8 KB

Tap 12v+ at fuse panel (use the empty RADIO slot that has an arrow pointing to it). Run that wire to switch, then out of switch to relay as follows:

85 = 12v+ from fuse panel
86 = ground
87a = positive speaker wire from stereo
87 = positive speaker wire from cb
30 = positive output to speaker

When switch is off, speaker input runs from 87a to 30
When switch on, coil energizes, throw moves to 87, and now speaker input runs from stereo.

Use a relay for each speaker, but just split the power wire from the switch to both relays at 85 - that way when you flip the switch, both relays change inputs - one for left, one for right.

You want to make sure that the speaker output from the cb matches the Ohms of the speaker.

{the fine print}
I make no promise this will work, but it should. As with any internet 'advise', don't come looking for me if a speaker blows or something.

Re: added CB radio, would like speakers on a switch, coming from 2 sources

how is your signal with the antenna on its side? i have everything hooked up, but i have not mounted the antenna yet. i want to choose wisely, and hopefully wont have to make any new holes.

i have my "box" under my console also, even though my box is basically just a receiver.

i like the tweeter idea, but like i said, the only 'speaker out' that i have is in the mic.

i have the headphone output slot in the 'box' under the console. so unless i can rig up a double male headphone connector to get a speaker to work, i'll need something with a headphone jack input, or rca jack would work also.

and even if i choose to run a tweeter off the speaker in the mic, i dont want to fry the mic from having additional power coming in, or out of it.

I haven't got mine mounted yet either, but because the bumper is plastic/rubber it shouldnt really effect the signal.

What about using a computer speaker that plugs into the headphone jack? Just take it apart and use the speaker itself, it will allow you to mount it anywhere you want

i might run out and check out computer speakers. good idea. but arent most battery operated? i would like to hide it, but maybe i can mount a sleek looking one if i can find one. it'll look like KITT. boohyah.

haha. i only tried out the CB in my parking spot, under a metal carport (but i can try it out elsewhere now, since i got plates on it a few hours ago FINALLY!) and tried to see if i can get a signal from not having it totally horizontal. i know thats a big thing with cb radios, if it's not totally vertical, it severely effects the range. but hell, let me know how it works if you hook it up in the bumper. i'd like to avoid drilling holes, and causing longterm rust problems.

If it doesn't work then I am taking the cb out of my car and just wait till I get my truck later. Im not gunna put an antenna on my roof again lol. I've got a cheap walmart antenna that doesnt really get that good of a signal but I was gunna test it out where I know it worked before and then if it worked then I was gunna upgrade to a big boy antenna that fit the length of the bumper

And with the battery thing, maybe get a power one and just wire it in to a 12v source with a toggle so you could switch it on and off if you wanted. If not just make sure that it isnt a battery or external power one

yeah, i used the magnet antenna on one of the previous cars. worked pretty well, but different story on cross country drives. but putting something like that on a 3rd gen would just be an absolute disgrace to the car.

I don't know - didn't look bad on the Bandit's 2nd gen T/A, and it gives you a place to "hang your hat"

I promise you if you hide your antenna under your rear bumper side ways it will absolutley fry your cb, and you will have zero radius for transmission, and reception. I don't know how many times you've done this but if you don't adjust your cb antenna right even if it's on your roof, it will eventually fry your cb. Adjusting the antenna is crucial, the way a cb antenna works is that it bounces off the roof of your car, you have to have some realestate for it to bounce off of or it will be pointless to have.

No problem man, I love my cb, just hate to see people burn up theirs, I always hear people say, "I don't know why but my cb's seem to always break"... lol it's cause they never adjust them, my cb was made in 1978 and it's not broken me yet!

Re: added CB radio, would like speakers on a switch, coming from 2 sources

I have several CB's. Being a truck driver (Among many other things.) has it's perk's. Look at the big rigs running up and down the road. There is a reason their antennas are mounted high and as far as possible from the trucks body. I havent run a CB in any of my thirdgens and most of the reason is that there is an absolute JACK*** here in town with (He claims) about 10,000 watts of power and he gets off on "Stomping" on truck drivers, and pretty much everyone within a 40 mile radius who tries to use a CB. Simply speaking, if he dosent want you to be heard, you wont be. I have one in my Jeep, but I take it out when I'm not running with a group on the trails.

I highly recommend getting a good quality CD antenna at radioshack.

Radio shack? Hmm forgive me but I think the truck stops carry some pretty good antennas... And I'd take a Pilot over a Flyin J but hey thats just me lol
Anyways Scooter you should just get you a speaker just for the CB. They have the box ones (also at truck stop lol) that really are more than enough. That's what I always used. Plus you could find a way to stealth mount it close to you, so you can jam and listen for that commercial company easily at the same time hahaha

Ha there's someone who hasn't had a truck stop cb antenna very long Truck stop cb's are typically poor quality, I bought a cb antenna from a flying j down the street last fall, and it rusted to pieces by the beginning of spring, now I know you may never heard of buying a cb antenna from radioshack, but no need to call someone out on something just because you're too ignorant to know about it. Here’s what I'm talking about: http://www.radioshack.com/product/in...uctId=2413195#

It's really made by midland, which I know you may never heard of, but midland is a staple in the cb community having been in the business for around 50 years. The reason I suggested a through glass is that they're much smaller than a trucker's cb antenna, and stealthier because there is no exterior wire to run. Not all cb antennas from truck stops are cheap, they do sell brands like firestick, but good luck doing any sort of stealthy install with a firestick.

yeah i got a few firesticks (2 ft and a 5ft), and just picked up the drop mount for it. and i can do stealth... if i wanted to

previous owner put in wrong size front speakers, the ones in are just sitting it the speaker well, and they are about 3 inches. might mount one next to rear driver speaker for it in that panel when i decide to replace the fronts. or maybe do the tweeter idea, and get her in the headliner behind the visor. my headliner is trashed now, and pretty much covered in duct tape till i get a new one or find time to make a fiberglass one. so, not too worried about wrecking it. however, the weight of the speaker alone might be too much for my headliner, since the white clips up by the visors are both broken.
