New Door Buildouts & Speakers
Working on putting a new system in my IROC. Going from two to one mid in the door. Door speakers for now will be Clarion Pro SSS501 comps.
Old door buildout. Keeping the buildout but changing the speakers.
Removed insert
Cut new inserts from MDF and seal the wood
Few coats of Red Engine Enamel paint and three coats of clear coat
DONE - Hushmat Sound Deadener will be applied to entire back of the insert
Will run the speakers off the deck power for now.
Deck is a Pioneer Premier P880 with Humount insert.
Also picked up an Image Dynamics IDMAX 12" sub that will go in the rear hatch area next year.
Undecided on an amp but front contender is the Alpine PDX-V9

Re: New Door Buildouts & Speakers
The fact that the second set (painted) also has deadener applied to the back helps with vibration.
I had to do it this was as the original speakers were 6.4" and the Clarion's are smaller.
Eventually I will put 6.5" speakers in so this only has to last a year or so.

Re: New Door Buildouts & Speakers
Bill,
That is looking real good. I am working through my interior and now is time to do custom door panels. So I have some specific questions for you. I am ready to get my 6.5"s out of the dash.
Are the buildouts sealed? Do the speaker magnets poke through the buildouts and door panel?
How far do the buildouts come off the door panel?
How deep are your speakers?
Any concerns with knee space?
Thoughts on door speakers vs kick panels regarding both knee/foot space and sound quality?
Thanks,
John

Hi John,
Thanks for the kind words.
Are the buildouts sealed?
No they are not sealed but have Dynamat behind the speaker.
Do the speaker magnets poke through the buildouts and door panel?
Yes, I had to cut parts of the door metal to get them to fit. They are very close to the PW motor but no interference issues.
How far do the buildouts come off the door panel?
Total is 2"
How deep are your speakers?
Speakers were just over 2.5". If the panel is flush with the front of the buildout, I have just over 3" of clearance
Any concerns with knee space?
NONE
Thoughts on door speakers vs kick panels regarding both knee/foot space and sound quality?
Personally, I'd go with door buildouts. Better sound and foot room. If you decide on kick panels, build them out flat rather than the Q-forms that have the speaker on an angle.
I'm going to run the tweets in the dash and see how I like the sound. If I'm not happy, I'll mount them in the A-pillar. off axis.
I picked up a set of Hertz MLK's (Baby Mille) and will install when I decide on an amp and ready to do a full stereo install.

Re: New Door Buildouts & Speakers
Excellent, that was my plan.
Ok. Good to know, I figured the magnets would be right on top of the motor, but maybe there is some room to mount just away from the motor.
Ok, that is not too bad. My thought at the moment is to use slim (1.75-2") speakers and avoid metal work, but still have good knee clearance. I feel like there is some clearance between the door panel and the metal behind, do you have an idea off hand?
That is really helpful. My car is in a zillion pieces right now, so visualizing this is hard.
I ok, exactly what I was thinking on all fronts.
I have mine in the a-pillar right now, off axis. Driver side pointed to the passenger seat. I'm not sure how I feel about them there. To many variables to tell for sure.
Nice I was thinking about a set of Hertz slims.

I know Hawk92z-TDZ used a 3/4" spacer and Hertz space/slim speakers in his door with no issues (see link)

Re: New Door Buildouts & Speakers
If memory serves, there is just under 1.5" of space. If I put the red panel flush to the buildout, I have just over 3" until I hit the motor. Perfect for my MLK's.
