Remember when I created the same thread only for TPI? Hardly anyone was in the 13's and only one guy in the 12's.

Almost the same engine and exhaust except carb, and these guys are pulling a full second on the TPI guys. Just some evidence why Carbs are here to stay.

Other reason, is so that the people who have similiar setups and look on here and say, "that is probably, what I will run."

1991 Camaro RS 4150 650cfm VS on 305 small block from 86 z28 with Holley Street Dominator Manifold, MSD 8361 Pro-Billet Street distributor w/vacuum advance, 6a ignition and blaster 2 coil. Flexalite Low profile puller fan, optima red top, under drive pulley, moroso 8mm blue max wires, and pro comp rocker arms. 700r4 trans 3.42 gears.

I was disappointed in my times, the car can do massive burnouts and holeshots. Feels like there is plenty of power, but it just doesn't seem to be pulling like it should. I was shifting around 4.5k, the motor would start to pop after that. Motor has a little stumble at wot. But i'll post my best run out of 7. Anyone have any advice? Does this sound right?

60' 2.259
330 6.668
1/8 10.309
mph 67.42
1000 13.437
1/4 16.050
mph 86.40
Basically you have a bone stock 305, that is why it is so slow. None of the add ons you have are really going to make it go faster. Stock 305 cam and converter are killing you. A 16 second pass for a carbed stock 305 is about all they do.

I had a bone stock tbi 305 in my car that i put a carb on and it ran 15.5s with a sliping trany. Put a new trany and added a 3k 10" converter and it would run consistant 15.0s with a best of a 14.9x.

Re: Post your Carb times! 1/4's and 1/8ths

okay how do you manually shift a 700R4... without moddification

then if you are breaking up around 4500rpms there is something wrong

so yes i think those times could be better as you were probably pushing 4500rpms at the end and only accelerated 19 mph from your speed at the 1/8

Whats your jetting, rods and accelerator pump setting on the 1406 - I'm fine tuning on mine and curious to what others have run. I'm hopeful, if you can run a 14.9, I think between me running a similar combo, but w/ headers and a small cam, a stall and 3.73 rear, I could put down a mid 14. Only one way to find out, maybe in a few weeks.

Carb was bone stock with no adjustments made to it. took it out of the box, put it on the intake and just drove it.

No kidding. Mine tolerated a lot more fuel than the stock calibration, I ended up with stock primary jets, .73/.42 rods, stock vacuum springs, and .101 secondary jets, with the accelerator pump in the middle hole. I'm gonna run a plug chop for the top end, but I think I'm still lean up there.

Re: Post your Carb times! 1/4's and 1/8ths

I didn't know anything about carbs (still don't really know anything about them now).
The stock quadrajet stopped working (MC Solenoid failed or something) and I was quoted $200+ to rebuild it, so I opted to go with the Edelbrock 1406 since it was only $219 at Advance Auto and the Vacuum advanced dist was $60 I think.
I put those parts in and the car ran like a raped ape. I was pleased.

this video was the day I hit 14.9 (was also my very first time at a drag strip)
unfortunately, no one videotaped that pass.

If I ever get a dedicated drag car (or just get tired of going straight), I'd love to put a 6 speed in this car. Tell you what though, a friends firebird flat out hooks and goes on a 6800 rpm clutch dump. Think he's running a 29x9 slick.

K ran the car finally! Corrected sea level time is as follows:

14.6 @ 96 mph

Still need to get dyno tuned. But I'm decently happy,

Last time out with the new engine with only 1 pass on it, 11.17 but forget the mph. A shift linkage broke during the burnout on the 2nd run 3550 lb car, all motor and pulling the front wheels off the ground a good amount.

Sounds like a nice streetable combo. Isn't 600cfm a bit small for heads like that? I would think if your going to go vacuum secondary, you might as well go with the 750cfm on a 350 w/ good heads and a mild cam. What kind of tires are you going to run, that is going to make or break your launch. You didn't mention the converter either.

I would think if your going to go vacuum secondary, you might as well go with the 750cfm on a 350 w/ good heads and a mild cam. What kind of tires are you going to run, that is going to make or break your launch. You didn't mention the converter either.
I would say it needed more carb, 650 DP or 700 cfm standard.

Converter is going to depend on what you want for the car, but a happy medium would be a 2500-3000rpm stall, will lockup still maintained. With 3.73 gears behind a 700R4's wildly low first, you don't need a ton of converter unless your gonna run aggressive enought tires to stick all that torque in first. I have a 2500 stall w/ 3.73's behind my 305, it works pretty good, I can blow the tires off in first with that little motor, so any more converter would be a waste anyways. Think before you upgrade the converter, you need to strongly consider more than a 600cfm carb. 650 or more with a double pumper, with vacuum secondaries 750cfm would be fine.

Re: Post your Carb times! 1/4's and 1/8ths

I just ran the time in my signature last weekend at Super Chevy with poor traction. This combo should be good for high 10's with a fresh set of tires.....my ET streets are worn out .
