Idle too high/Clicking noise in Q-Jet

Hey everyone,

I am new to this site, and new to working on cars (Im trying my best to learn haha).

Anyways, I just purchased an 83 camaro z28 305 5 speed. The old carb was trashed, and the tank had 6 year old gas in it. I removed the gas, put 94 octane in and replaced the carb with a new Rochester Quadra-Jet.

The car starts up great, but instantly is at about 3500 or 4000 RPM's. I checked for vaccum leaks and couldn't find any. The idle screw is not even touching the throttle, and the throttle cant go back any further than where its at. I unplugged the electronic choke to see if that was doing it, but it wasnt. Is there any other way to get the idle to go down other than the idle screw itself?

Also, I am not sure what the plug is called, but its the one (if youre looking from the front of the carb) thats on the top with the 3 pronged insert that looks like an upside down 'L' (its blue). When that is hooked up, there is a rapid ticking noise that comes from that area of the carb when you turn the ignition and let it sit before you start it. It ends up going away after about 15 seconds, but does it each time before you fire it up.

Any help and suggestions would be extremely appreciated.. And I apologize in advance for my lack of knowledge in the mechanic world... I'm doing my best.

You can directly email me here: summersets@hotmail.com

Thanks!

Re: Idle too high/Clicking noise in Q-Jet

While the choke is closed after a cold start, the engine will be on fast idle until the engine warms up and the choke opens. 3500 or 4000 RPM is pretty high for fast idle, but I'd suspect that your tach is reading high. Try putting a diagnostic tach on it and see what it reads.

The clicking noise is the mixture control solenoid. It's normal. If it stops clicking, then you've got something to worry about.

Re: Idle too high/Clicking noise in Q-Jet

I really hope that somebody can help you out. No, I'm not a really nice guy but I do have the same problem. I just yanked out my Computer Controlled Q-Jet and put in a refurb that doesn't need the Computer. Yes, I also put in a new distributer that didn't need the Computer either. Unfortunately, the car shoots up to 2500rpm instantly. I tried to adjust the thermostatic spring that the wire for the electric choke connects to, but then the car won't start... So, then I adjusted the fast Idle screw; no difference. This car is my primary driver and I'm a fool - Please help us...

Re: Idle too high/Clicking noise in Q-Jet

here are some things I learned about my car after starting drive a carb car again.

when starting the car it should idle at about 1100 - 1600 rpms for a brief time in the summer. then when the gas pedal is touched again it should drop to ~600 rpms within ~3 minutes or so.

before adjusting anything on the car, here's what I do to start my car. first, I press the gas pedal ~1.5 inches and let it out real slow. I do that again. the choke cam will move to adjust itself and am idle screw will be set by resting in a cold start position. then I turn the key and see how fast the engine is turning as described above. this starting routine is important for my car.

There could be several adjustments but here are the 2 easy ones.

There is a screw one that works w/ your choke by riding a cam and that screw is on the passanger's side. it uses a torx screw head. if you turn it clockwise then the rpms rise during start up, provided the choke and cam are in the correct position. once your car is warmed up this screw shouldn't be causing idle prm to raise unless it's set way too much.

There is a screw that controls the idle after the car is warmed up (driver's side). It never changes once set. turn it clockwise and rpms go up. this screw is harder to turn unless you push the throttle back with your hand to take tension off.

It you look at the top of the forum you'll see a sticky article on adjusting your Rochester E4ME CCC carb. check it out for pictures and details and more info on carb adjustments. I use the search function for key words too.
