confused about carb.

confused about carb.
I am taking my old worn out 305 out today its out of a 85 z28 camaro with over 260,000 on it. I got a GM goodwrench used crate engine with 46,000 on it. The crate has a Edlerbrock 1406 carb. on it right now and my 305 has the q-jet. I was going to take the distributor out of my 305 and use it on the 350 because I just replaced cap and rotor and plug wires. But I was going to keep the Edlebrock on there for now. But I was told if you went with a different carb other then the origanil you need to get a new distributor? The one on the 350 has a vacuum advance on it with the one plug in to the cap. while my 305 disty. has the one for the cap and another big plug that goes into something else not sure what its used for.
My main question is can I use the edlebrock carb on the 350 with my Disty.?
Or would I have to use my old carb. ?

Re: confused about carb.
I your still running a ecm you have to stick with the original carb and distributor. If the computer is long gone the you can use whatever carb/dist setup you want.

Let's be clear here - if you use any of the original parts (carb, distributor, computer), you have to use them all. You can't mix & match. The good news is the cap, rotor, coil, spark plug wires, power and tach wires are all the same as a non-computer large-cap HEI. But, the simple truth that seems really hard to get through many thick skulls is the factory computer q-jet and distributor is the best street performance carb and ignition system out there.
With a 5-speed, it could be argued that a Holley-type double pumper carb would be the preferred set-up. But, "Edelbrock carburetor" are two words that should never be used together, especially when you have a T5 transmission and you already have a q-jet.
"Edelbrock" and "intake manifold" - that's a different story, and those are fine.
By the way, that "big plug that goes into something else" goes to the computer. It needs to be disconnected when you set the timing.

If I use the old setup that was on my 305 I would need to rebuild the qjet so it will run right on the 350? new internal parts and different jet sizes or would it just run fine just with a little adjustments?

I rebuilt mine between the 305 and 350 because it needed it, not because it was going on a 350. I set everything to the factory settings. I used the same rods & hangers as I did on the 305, and the factory primary jets are still in there as well.

How much did it cost? I would like to get my q-jet rebuilt by a professional. If it will be inexpensive then just sell the Eldelbrock to a friend thats looking for one.

I paid $30 for a rebuild kit and I think something like $8 for a new float, and did it myself.
Rebuilds reports vary from around $150 to $350 to have it rebuilt or exchanged for a rebuilt.

Re: confused about carb.
The CC carb has to use the CC distributor with the ecm. Any other carbs (like holley eldebrock) need the hei distributor with vacuum advcance. Personally I would ditch the computer controlled carb. IMO they are junk. I'd go with a holley for anything performance. But since you have the edelbrock already I would use that and see how it works. Opinions will vary see what works best for you.

The CC q-jet is the best street performance carb/system available. If you have a race-dedicated or manual tranny car, then go with a Holley. Otherwise, keep the CC q-jet.

IMO, that's the worst possible choice you could make.
But, it's your car and your money.

Cmon five7, it aint that bad. I agree that he should keep the ccqjet, but on a weenie engine like he is installing I imagine that edelbrock will run great and be a trouble free carb.
