1987 Firebird HOOD CLEARANCE

Not sure where the best forum to place this thread is, but lets try here....

Im putting a 1978 350 into my 87 firebird. It will have an Edelbrock Torker intake, and a Q-jet with a spread to square bore 1in adapter in between. Will it clear the hood???? I have a 88+ Trans am hood with the nostrils.

Currently i have a holley DP, thick gasket, with an RPM air-gap intake on a 75 350 in there with no issues.... I currently use a 3" air filter with a drop base.

Not concerned about the filter, i can figure something out, just worried about the Q-jet sitting atop a 1" spacer...

That's going to be a really tight squeeze with a one inch spacer. I'm guessing it's going to be too tall but you may be able to make it work with a drop base air cleaner.

Re: 1987 Firebird HOOD CLEARANCE

I can guess at it too guys, looking for a definative answer.

Not concerned about the aircleaner, i just want to know if the bare carb will clear the hood.

Also another tidbit. This doesnt really help the carb but it does help the air cleaner.

With my RPM air-gap, and 750 Holley, with the thick gasket (1/4 in i think?) and 3 in air cleaner, the tip of the air cleaner would hit the "frame" of the hood. So this is what i did.

Re: 1987 Firebird HOOD CLEARANCE

Just checked Edelbrock website, they dont have the Torker listed, only the Torker II.

The Carb pad height they say is;

(A + B) / 2 = Carb Pad Height.

My RPM air gap is 4.725 plus 1/4 gasket makes it 4.80.
Torker II is 4.08. plus 1 in spacer makes it 5.08.

So whats taller, the Holley, or the Q-jet? (Assuming Torker II is the same height as the Torker).

If i had to guess, id say with my current setup, i have 1/4 hood clearance, maybe less at the lowest point.

I would advise you to get rid of the Torker intake. There are many much better options out there for not too much money.

I had a Torker, Holley 3310 (square bore, so no spacer), and a generic 14x3 drop base in my '83 and it fit just fine. Was actually a pretty nice driver too... even though it had the stock low compression heads and the weak '79 Z28 cam.

Re: 1987 Firebird HOOD CLEARANCE

Not worried about the performance.

I measured the height of the Torker against a STOCK intake to a fixed point. There was 1/2 in of difference. Ive had a 14x3 air cleaner on my car with the stock intake and Q-jet before, and i remember there was alot of room.

But i wonder if i had about 1.5 inches with that setup left? Thats what it will turn out to be in the end.

Have a Victor Jr with a DP Holley and 3 inch drop base air filter and it fits on a Camaro but the front of the air cleaner rubs the hood a little. I am thinking you won't have a problem without an air cleaner.

So its nothing like my setup?

I have an extra hood with a hole in it also, but id prefer if i could keep the current hood, since i spent about 600 hours repainting the car...

Also, Firebird hoods slope much steeper than camaro hoods (so slightly less clearance).
