Fuel pressure regulator vs. changing the electric fuel pump please help!!!

Fuel pressure regulator vs. changing the electric fuel pump please help!!!
I have a Edelbrock performer 600cfm.... Should I buy a fuel pressure regulator or change out the electric fuel pump on the tank? Will the fuel pump on the block pull fuel through the lines if just disconnect the electric fuel pump?

its easier to run the intank electric with a return style regulator. you can use a mech pump to draw fuel through the dead pump, however you will run into fuel starvation issues at higher rpms. spend the money on a return style regulator and some good fuel hose and fittings. and wire the pump via a relay to come on with the key and be done with it.

Would the electric fuel pump already be wired to come on when the key was on?

You have to jump a wire by the relay for it to stay on. The pump will run long enough for it to start and then the computer doesn't think the car is running and shuts off the pump. Look for the the FI to Carb tech article think it is in there.

Any idea where the pump relay is located? That is on the list of things to do this weekend.

i am changing from my 305 tbi to my dads built 409 with a holley carb and wanted to know how to really do the whole swap and what i would need to do the swap. i was hoping to just pull my engine out put in the 409 get rid of most of the computer wires but keep the computer for the fuel pump and use the pump on the 409 engine to feed the engine also big question about the 700r4 tranni want to keep it cause it has been recently put in but i know there is something i need to make that tranni work properly any help with this swap would b great thanx

im guessing the 409 is a sbc 400 block? if thats the case, itll bolt right in place of the stock 305, itll even bolt right to the tranny. you might need a new flex plate though, if the 409 is a 2peice rear main seal block. and if the 409 block has the right holes in it for the starter, youll be able to bolt that right up as well. all the front accesories and brackets bolt right up too. as for the wiring, its the exact same as a standard tbi-carb swap, which there's massive amounts of threads on doing a carb swap.

ya its a small block 400 but biggest thing is keeping the in tank fuel pump having tht go to a mechanical fuel pump on the engine then to the carb would that feed the motor enough

keep the intake pump, wire the fuel pump realy to come on when u turn the key on, and get a return style regulator. thatll allow you to keep the intank pump and reduce it down to the 4-7 psi for the carb
