Air cleaner with a stock hood

What kind or size air cleaner will fit under a stock hood with a performer intake and QJet carb?
Thanks

Re: Air cleaner with a stock hood

A typical 14x3 with a 1.5" drop base. Kind you can find in the cheap chrome parts aisle at the local auto parts store.

They're not all built the exact same, though. You want to make sure that the base doesn't come into contact with the accelerator pump arm on the top of a QJet (check in throttle-closed and throttle-full-open positions). It's not uncommon to have to stack a couple extra air cleaner gaskets up to gain enough clearance to prevent it touching. Not all air cleaners will require this, but some do.

Thanks Damon I haven't got my motor together yet but now i know what to look for. Funny thing is i sold a flat hood and then i got to thinking i could have cut it and put a small scoop in it if i needed more clearance.

I've got a older Edelbrock 14x3 1.5" drop base, fits with no issues, but I have it on a Edelbrock 1406 carb as well.

Re: Air cleaner with a stock hood

I'm not sure if there is an internal height difference between the basic hood and the Formula hood, but my stock air cleaner assembly has a witness mark on the front edge of the lid where it just touches the Formula hood. Stock Q-jet with Performer manifold.

The H.O. dual snorkel fits nicely.
