88 RS Vert?
Just bought an 88 camaro vert. It has RS badges and was originally white. WHat is the RPO code for the RS package in 88? I honestly think this is a true RS vert. How many was made in 88? The camaro tech info list none...

Re: 88 RS Vert?
the RS was only available in a limited number of states in 1987 & 1988, I think California, Texas and Colorado??? not sure really, I know California for sure. and I am iffy on Texas.
They might have made a few RS convertibles in 1988, the emblems are easy enough to come by that they might have been added by a previous owner, its hard to tell without the RPO's
Another possiblity is that the vert was a Dealer ordered conversion rather than a Factory conversion, the only difference would be the VIN for a dealer ordered conversion would be a 1G1FP21, where a factory conversion would be a 3 instead of a 2

After 1988 the RS was the base model, there was no SC...
Take your RPO's and punch them into a decoder, the ones that do not come back post here and someone should know.

Re: 88 RS Vert?
I'll report back with the unknown RPOs. Just wondering even if they had an RPO code for RS that year? I hear that some years didn't have one...? This car also has the "grid" style tail lights. Anyone know the RPO for those, if there is one?

Re: 88 RS Vert?
Still no luck on the RS RPO.
...here are the RPOs that the decoder showed nothing..
E7Z
WW5
1AY
19T
92P
I'm just hoping there is a way to verify this is a true RS. Would like to have the production numbers updated, if so. Not saying it's the only one. Just want to know what I have!

Re: 88 RS Vert?
19T = (Black convertible Top, not all were black from Chevy in 1988)
92P = Wheel color ( I would guess Red)
WW5 = Might be your RS package as the W series RPOS appear to be mostly packages IE WA4 = Merchandised Pkg, Cadillac Special Edition, WB7 Merchandised Pkg, Exterior appearance, WB7 Conversion, Fleetwood, WS4 Conversion package Trans Am, WS9 Model Conversion (Formula) although this one changed from year to year. I did find a WW5 which was an Aero Package of some sort...
Some WW5 possibilities: AERO PKG (LT CHESTNUT MET), WW5 APPEARANCE PACKAGE , ACCENT #5
1AY = Stock Order Processing Code
E7Z = Gear, Speedometer (Delete) or Speedo Sleeve Deluxe.
I am thinking WW5 (MIGHT) I repeat MIGHT be what your looking for, but I have not seen another RPO which identifies the RS. What you might do is see if the car was originally shipped to a dealer in one of the participating states where you could actually get an RS Camaro in 1988. I want to say Flordia, California, Texas and Colorado or something along those lines. THe only one I know for sure is the California...

What you might do is go to Google & Yahoo and search for WW5 and RS and RPO, I did a search for WW5 & RPO and got the above information.

The car was originally white. Don't think gold or chestnut ground fx was original though. The car has federal emissions, that rules out california. CAN ANYONE HELP FIND OUT WHAT STATE THE CAR WAS ORIGINALLY FROM?

Re: 88 RS Vert?
You would probably need the original dealers invoice, available thru GM $50... but if it was an RS vert then it might pay for itself...
John

the RS in 1988 was also made for 2 or 3 other states so do not give up hope. 1987 was California only apparently.

Re: 88 RS Vert?
Thanks for the replies. I have a bro-in-law that works at a dealership. He will check about the invoice monday. The car has been repainted but the RPO codes verifies white exterior.
GENERAL QUESTIONS...
Did 88 RS badges look different than other years? Maybe someone knows the RPO for sports coupe? None of my RPOs came back for SC. Was the grid style tail lights only original on Z28's? Does the 88 RS have a camaro or RS emblem on the dash(w/o a doubt)? Did options group 4 need to be ordered to make an RS? Does anyone think this car will hold a higher value if it really is an RS (provided is it in near perfect shape, original color)? It doesn't matter, the car will not be for sale. Just looking for opinions and hopefully some answers...

Re: 88 RS Vert?
No, and I know what you are going to say. No RS V8's in 87-88, right? The RS emblems was painted around. They really seem like they have never been removed. I have the original RPO sticker. Figure there must be a RPO code for RS or SC in 88......

No RS V8's in 87-88...
.... and no V6 convertibles either. So it has to be one or the other, not both.
There is no RPO for the RS, just like the sport coupe. These were the base models in their respective years and as far as I know, no GM base model has an RPO code. Having one would be redundant.
The 1987-88 RS was limited in geographic regions and numbers produced. It was produced and sold in these limited areas to test the water to see if it was a viable replacement for the base Sport Coupe. It was not considered a "regular" production car until 1989 when it replaced the SC. Since the RS was considered the base Camaro as is the SC, as unfortunate and unbelievable as it may seem, there is no RS RPO.

I know this may be a little off topic but do people really dislike the sc cars because their base models? Are the RPO codes located in the center console? If so why do the sc cars have RPO code in the console?

Re: 88 RS Vert?
Wonder how many 88 SC verts came with a v8?
Still have no way to prove/disprove this is a true RS. Since there is no supposed rpo or documentation specific to the 88 RS, it's hard to find out for sure.
..are the production numbers listed in TGO's tech data 100% ABSOLUTE???

If you keep your eyes open you will figure it out, I can't remember right now who you contact but GM has contracted with an outside company to take care of it for them....
As for Window stickers, once you get your dealer invoice, you can have a window sticker made from that. THere is a place online that must do a pretty good job as they do the ones for PHS.

Know of at least 1 for sure. Mine.
88 Sport Convertible 305 TBI, auto
Red with the GFX painted gray. Have seen 2 others identical. One on the news in Nashville while visitng thre 2 years ago and one in pics from Arizona.
And about the only differeence in them and the IROC is the hood (and decaling). cause I also have an '88 IROC convertible in the house...oh and the IROC came with TPI but STILL only a 305.....

I have one, red with silver at the bottom with upgraded interior with a 305. All original, I purchased it from the original owner a couple of months ago. all it needed was a fuel pump. It was in storage for the past seven years. I is a local car from a local dealer the title still has the buyers order stapled to it. Its my first Camaro!!!

I think the problem is not with the SC as there were alot of the SC convertibles were made in 1988. That same year they had a limited area release of the RS avaialbe in certain states California for sure, I want to think Colorado, Texas, Flordia???

I think those of us with the Red/Gray SC convertibles actually hijacked the thread for a bit.
According to the Forum, 1859 SC convertibles were built....wonder how many were Red/gray???????
