Re: tinting convertible rear window

The only real way to tint a plastic back window is using that spray stuff people use on tail lights. Probably won't look good though. Most tint shops won't tint plastic windows because the film won't have the same effect as on glass windows. For example the expansion contraction of heat and cold will be different then the tint, the window may get folded, etc all these issue can cause the tint to form bubbles, get creased or have the glue pop. Best thing is to wait till you replace the top with a glass rear window, then have it tinted.

Re: tinting convertible rear window

I would be afraid to do that, especially if the window tinting is not compatible with the rear window. Some plastics do not like other plastics, I have seen one plastic actually deteriorate another plastic because as it gasses out, the fumes from one attack the other.

Re: tinting convertible rear window

I had the factory worn plastic window replaced with a tinted plastic one. it looked nice but I could hardly see threw it, and since it was thinner, it didn't last long... If you really want to have your rear window tinted, get the top with the window glass and then you can tint it!

Re: tinting convertible rear window

You can't use plastic window tint on plastic windows (See question 4)

http://www.gilafilms.com/en/Auto-Tint-FAQ.aspx

I plan to re-top mine probably in the spring and I had planned to go with the glass. I know that it's shorter but has anyone had a problem with breaking one when they are putting the top down.

Although I do not have a Glass window, I have read that you have to lean the back seat forward to put the top down or up. ( I do this anyway because the top bunches on the seat when I put it down) You then lean the seat back when the top is up or stowed.

I believe your right. i remember reading the same thing, but I dont have rear seats anymore, so i cant confirm that. But it does fit nicely between my rear rollbars.

That's not a problem as I keep my seats folded down all the time anyway. I've seen too many of them dry rotted at the top by the sun.

Re: tinting convertible rear window

i do believe the seat does need to fold down a little cause the window seams to fold behind it

Re: tinting convertible rear window

I have a convertible top with the glass window and you do have to drop the seat only about 5 inches. No need to fold it down all the way.
