Z28 Blew up. got too hot.

:lala:
Well I bought a Z28 and it went bang. The heater matrix blew and seemed to cause either the head gasket or the block to crack. (i am awaiting a report to varify this.) The car now has no power so something serious has gone wrong.
It appears that the Z28 and or the 205 and 350 TPI models are prone to overheating problems (is this right)

- After my car is repaired what parts should i buy to combat this?

- My car has a new Rad and also has had the AC removed for more power. So should I try something like (wetter than water?)

Thanks for all your advice.:hail:

"Heater matrix", as in heater core? That's hardly a fatal problem.

when the heater matrix or heater core as you call it blows up as in my case.... it caused the engine to overheat extremely quickly.... just to give you a idea how quick i didnt have time to pull off to the hard shoulder of the motor way before the engine went off ... meaning died or cut off... no power...
so yes it is fatal!
and yes it is a serious problem.
now due to this stupid or (non fatal problem) as you call it
My engine has to be rebuilt and i am unsure what damage has been caused..
if it is a cracked block or the head gasket blew up.

So be warned it can be FATAL!

Car: 85 firebird
Engine: Pos 2.8 pulled and replaced with a 350 tpi motor converted to carb.
Transmission: 700r4, vette servo, shift kit, hayden 15"x8" trans cooler.
The HEATER CORE cracking, blowing etc, IS NOT fatal unless you just keep driving with coolant leaking from the bad heater core untill your engine is empty.

Happend to me already. I was turning left, car shifted into second and coolant poured down the pass side floor.

Pulled over, bypassed the heater core and went along driving, the car has been like that for a few months now.

Like said above, its hardly fatal.

I appreciate what your saying.. Dont get me wrong. but it has the potential to be FATAL to the engine. As I was driving on the motorway at aprox 70mph. in the middle lane. you can not simply just pull over when your side by side with a lorrie.
I had slowed down to go behind the lorrie and pull onto the hard shoulder. Because I had just done 100+ miles the engine was already hot. And it was only a matter of seconds before coolant came rushing in and the engine going bang.
So yes I agree with what you said... But as I say it can go bang.

So thanks for your imput but without going into a debate with you over this situation I would greatly appreciate some advice from someone who knows how to avoid this or any overheating problems.
But thanks for your imput!:hail:

I guess what we're trying to say is that you may have other problems, since you should have been able to run for several minutes with no coolant at all before anything serious happened.

Yes well that is one of my concerns... however I know the engine was hot. to be honest VERY hot.
but I want to go through this car with a fine tooth comb and buy every product available to ensure my baby is not exploding on me on the motorway.
so suggestions please.

Who rebuilt the motor? Was the cooling system working properly before this happend?

Stuff i have done to make my car run as cool as i can are,.

160* thermo ( my car is non cc so i dont have any open/closed loop issues some people may have with a low * temp)

Hayden adjustable fan switch, Set to about 150* on.

New rad.

LARGE trans cooler with the internal rad cooler bypassed.

One bottle of water wetter.

I've never had a cooling issue yet.

When my car had the pos 2.8 in it ,it blew a head gasket. (also had a crack in the block)I never want to have to replace a head gasket again so i tried everything to make the car run cooler.

It was just picked up today. So the engine has not been rebuilt yet. It is going off to check the problem and if needed to rebuild it. They suspect that it might need some rebuilding or a new engine if all fails.
but thanks for the advice on the cooling... i will get some wetter than water stuff and also a second fan.

lol stupid

if yer motor has sustained that much damage that it has no power or your block is cracked, it just plain stupid to try to fix or rebuild it. Just go buy a new one lol, Fools

New Engine has gone in. new heater core. or heater matrix.. It is just having the final touches done. and should be ready to drive away this week. I am very much looking forward to that. Now I can focus on the important issues.. like modifying the car to my taste. I am desperate to get some of those chevy mags that are in america. Anyone have any kicking about.. old within last 12 months... if so put it on ebay and if you have a pay pal account i can pay. I am not going to pay the silly money and subscribe to a mag and pay 3-4 times what it cost.
And if anyone has any ideas or web sites etc let me know pleaseeeeeee.
thanks
