Fan on @ 250 in 91 rs

My electric fan doesnt pop on til about 250* and then turns off around 210*, i called autozone and asked if they had the cooling fan switch, and what * they turn on / off at, and he had no clue what temps they turned on and off at. Is the problem most likely the cooling fan switch, and where can i get one that turns on fairly early, like 200* or so ?

Thanks.

hypertech and jet chips both make switches that turn on at lower temps

change your thermoustat to a 180 if you use one

So I will need a new Chip to do this ? Its normal for the fan to turn on at such high temps ?

Its always been my understanding that the factory settings were extremely high for the fans to kick on.My gta gets so high that it worries the crap out of me.I think the reason the factory set the fans to kick on so high had to due with passing emissions. The higher the temps the lower the emissions.Unfortunately this has adverse effects on the engine.Just get a chip buned that cuts the fans on at a lower temp.Thats what i plan to do.

Mine doesn't turn on till 260... All the way in the red... Scares the crap out of me... It turns off at about 230 to 240 (when it should turn on)

The fan is set to turn on at 240 from the factory.

I changed the fan switch/temp sending sensor... No change...

Run fan to power, it works fine... Jump the diagnostic terminals, fan kicks on (so I know the computer is communicating with it)

when it sits at 260, there are no problems, it doesn't idle rougher, I'm not getting anything in the overflow tank (radiator cap tested ok too), and there is no real loss of power that I can notice.

It never steams or smokes, and doesn't even really smell hot.

I think a widely overlooked fact on these boards is that the TEMPERATURE GAUGES ON THESE CARS ARE NOT THAT ACCURATE AFTER 15+ YEARS... lol

fan switch options

Click this link to see what temps the fan switches turn on at, and then decide which one you want to buy. Bear in mind that our factory gauges suck pretty bad. They are usually about 20º on the high side. So if you gauge is reading 250º, chances are, if you check with a scanner, the CTS will be reading 230º, or lower.

Ok, with those though, do you need to get a re-burned chip ?

Ya know, I wasn't even looking to see that yours is a v-6. I don't think those fan switches are going to be an option for you. I believe the fan for the v-6 may run off of the chip by way of the CTS. So, you just might have to have a chip reburned to take care of your problem. But I seem to remember someone on here talking about an aftermarket fan wiring kit, that allows you to adjust the on-temp, even with using the stock prom.
