Coolant Leak Onto Harmonic Balancer?

After a woe of cooling issues, I have yet another.

The other day I noticed a small leak under the engine, and tried to determine the source. All i could find was where it was dripping onto. The coolant, was leaking on the area behind the belt on the harmonic balancer.

If it isnt the harmonic balancer its the lowest pully to the ground and in the center of the engine.

I am not sure where the water pump is, as some have thought it could be that, was recently replaced, this could not be a cracked block could it? As there was a time where pure water was run, and there were freezing temperatures. I did however drain all the water out before morning came, but who knows...

Thanks in advance for your help!!

It does sound like a water pump leak even though it's been replaced, I've had new pumps fail not long after replacement. Aftermarket parts have poor quality control.

Definitely sounds like a water pump. If you've got the scratch, pickup a stewart stage II. Or it could be they didn't use liquid teflon on the bolts that hold the waterpump in, or that the gaskets they used were bad. A lot of stuff can cause a leak right there.

If you add more h20 then you might try to see where leak is from:
add h20. start car. stop car after a couple minutes. use a dentist mirror from auto parts store ($2 maybe). shine a flashlight and try to see leak using mirror. h20 pump leaks start from a small weep hole from bottom of pump.

Re: Coolant Leak Onto Harmonic Balancer?

Water pump, water pump gaskets, could even be the intake manifold if its running down the front of the block. Could be the thermostate houseing leaking, could be a hose, could be a coolent bypass hose going to the heater core. Best thing to do, is fill it up with water, and try to find a leak. Try to get a hold of a pressure tester and pump it up to 16LBS and try to see where its leaking from.

Agreed something witht the water pump.
Yes that is the "harmonic balancer"
The pulley on the crank. It helps keep vibration down on the crank so the engine dosen't tear itself apart.
Harmonic balancer is a shade tree/home mechanic term. It is actually call the vibration dampener.
So you know.

Re: Coolant Leak Onto Harmonic Balancer?

The water pump is located in the front of engine, behind belts(obviously) but also check the intake/heads...do you have access to a pressure tester??
