its not ok to take the thermostat out.....the radiator fluid will get hot as soon as the motor gets hot and will not cool the motor properly.u could get a lower temp stat and replace the fan switch located on the passanger head to kick on earlyer i think alot of peaple do the 180 degree thermostat with the matching fan switch.....and as for the radiator i got a 4 row aftermarket and it didnt fit properly all i did was bend a peice of metal from home depot to hold the top of the radiator and got rid of the original plastic peice..i will look for pics but it was really easy.....

ohh sorry bought that i thought u had ele. fans...the fan switch on my moter is where your talkin about(pass side head between bolts) the temp gauge is on the drivers side head i would think that would be the one the gauge would go to but im not 100% sure.....there are lots of helpfull people on this site that might be able to help a little more than i.....i really only know about tpi motors seems thats what i have....but as for the radiator just grab a tap measure and see what would be the biggest u can it in the space and im sure you could make it fit with a little effort....good luck

Re: any radiator alternatives that are known to fit?

years ago, checking the junkyard, found quite a few GM
radiators that had the same core dimension, and quite a
few of those had the correct LH tank as well-problem
was they all had the wrong position of the lower hose
on the RH tank-they were too low. As long as the water
pump is turning it should be pumping as impeller
problems are very rare with chevy. If engine gets good
and hot(220-230*)then quickly drops down to 190*
or so and holds around that temp, there is probably a
bypass problem. If when engine is hot and the radiator
hoses are hot,but air blowing back from fan is cool or
just warm, dirty radiator is prime suspect-if its copper
-brass a radiator shop can clean it and fix any leaks
aluminum core radiators usually need replaced if they
are dirty internally with rust or scale.
Under what conditions does the heating occur?
-Stock '82 z28s will run around 190-195 at low speeds,
might run a little higher at high speed on a hot day
-at least thats how mine behaves
