Which fan is the primary one

Hey guys,
just got my 305 running again after a head gasket job. When a friend of mine was looking at it he noticed that the passenger side fan came on first. It never got hot enough for the second to turn on but he was say that the driver side fan should come on first to cool the hot water coming in.

Can someone verify?

thx

Re: Which fan is the primary one

Driver side is the primary fan. Secondary is on the passenger side.

Re: Which fan is the primary one

in my 88 iroc:
primary: driver side (ECM controlled)
secondary: pass side (temp switch controlled)

when the secondary fan starts it will kick the primary fan too if it's off (ecm failure / temp switch lower than stock / manual switch) so i think yoo have to check wires, relay and fan motor.

let us know!

Re: Which fan is the primary one

Edit: Wrong info in this original post - Corrected in a later reply after doing some additional troubleshooting!

My '92 Z28 (5.0) kicks the driver side on, but I've never seen the passenger one move. Turning on the A/C or the car getting to 238 degrees will set the driver side spinning.

The passenger just sits there doing nothing, and I believe it should be kicking on at 220 via ECM. I need to track that down. I don't trust one electric fan ... I like backup!

Re: Which fan is the primary one

Thanks all, I agree with u mike, your setup should be just like mine. I'm pretty sure my primary fan comes on when the a/c is on which seems to be backwards. I'm slowly learning about all the rigged up secrets that the previous owner did to the car. When I bought it the secondary fan was wired straight to ignition so it was always on. Gonna see if other fan comes on with a/c and if so I'm clipping wires and switching em.

Re: Which fan is the primary one

Okay, found out mine isn't doing exactly what I thought. I said the passenger side never came on ... That's because it's not gotten hot enough to.

My driver side is functioning as primary. It comes on (alone) when I turn the A/C on. It also comes on via ECM at 220. Verified this is the ECM side via the ALDL A-B jumper.

My passenger side does come on if the wire to the temp switch (between 6 & 8, passenger side head) is jumped to ground. So both fans work fine, as designed.

I had a lower temp secondary fan switch (215 vs 238), but just couldn't get the old one out. So I ended up doing something that I like even better ...

I ran a toggle switch inside the car, whereby I can ground that wire any time I want to. I will do that before the ECM-driven side comes on at 220. I prefer cooler to hotter.

And if I leave the switch alone (or just forget), the system will still function as designed ... Driver at 220, passenger at 238. So now I have control, and factory design(s) still function.
