Water pump question

I picked up a motor, a 5.7L from a '87 Firebird w/ TPI.

It is going into a '92 which is carbed..

While it was out I was planning on putting on a new water pump. They're $32 at Autozone:
http://www.autozone.com/autozone/par...7_117067_6245_

Is that reverse rotation pump the right one & a good idea?

Thanks!

Re: Water pump question

I'd spend a little extra and get a quality water pump-
GM,edelbrock,stewart or other U.S.made
For $32,that duralast pump is probably chinese junk
that will leave you beside the road with your hood up

Rebuilts often have hub runout,so i don't care for those
either.

Re: Water pump question

GM or Stewart... the Edelbrock pump isn't anything special.

Reverse rotation if you have serpentine belts, standard rotation if you have V belts.

After owning 7 of these cars I can't believe I'm asking this but where the heck do you find a genuine GM part? The dealership?

Re: Water pump question

i may be a bit biased (having worked at a few parts stores past & present, you're welcome to take my opinion with a huge grain of salt), but i've never seen any of the brand new, lifetime warranty sbc pumps fail regardless of its country of origin. The remans, definitely, but on a stock application the sbc water pump's pretty much figured out.

Re: Water pump question

Cool, thanks everyone..
I ended up coming up w/ 1 more question- Looks like some pumps come w/ an outlet to the A/C.. Guess I should decide if I am going to run A/C or not before buying- is this correct?

Re: Water pump question

You can plug the heater connection if your hose routing isn't going to use it.

Re: Water pump question

I went to ACDelco.com and looked up the part. For the '87 5.7L they used p/n 252-595. I looked on eBay and found a NEW 252-595 for $29! It is on the way. There are different p/ns for the 88> cars- not sure what the difference is. I think I'm going to paint it blue.

Re: Water pump question

'88 up is a counterclockwise rotation pump meant for
serpentine belt setups and does not have an accesory
bracket tab. '87 cars use the standard clockwise rotation
pump found on most 1976-'87 small block chevys.
Besides the different rotation, the hub bolt circle is
different so the"wrong"pulleys will not bolt on without
modifications-as long as you use '87-earlier belt system
that pump will work fine.
