AC Compressor help!

Can these compressors be turned counter clockwise so that the wiring is away from the brackets? I知 not even sure that this rats nest is standard. I see photographs of other TPI engines and the connector is not at the top like the one on mine. By the way I知 looking for the front/top bracket as you can see some genius drilled it out. Any help is appreciated.

Re: AC Compressor help!

Yeah it seems like someone replaced the compressor with one that has the clutch magnet clocked for another application. You can't clock the whole compressor because then the hoses won't hook up anymore. The connector on the back (high pressure cut-off switch) is normal, that's just where it ends up. The one on the front (clutch magnet) can be moved, but you need to take the clutch, pulley, and magnet off to do it.

I recently replaced the pulley on mine. You can rent the tool for taking the clutch off from Autozone, but I'm not sure about how to safely get the magnet off and press it back on. I would do some searching on R4 compressor rebuilds or R4 clutch replacements to get an idea of what's involved. They are very common so there should be tons of info about doing just about everything to one.

However if your AC is working well, unless it really bugs you that much, I would just leave the compressor alone and clean up and re-loom the wires. Probably extend them, or at least the clutch ones, so you can route them more nicely up to that connector. Right now, the rats nest look is happening because the wires are too short to route nicely and it's wrapped up in tons of tape and loom that's way too big. There are only two 18 or 16 AWG wires going to each connector, they really shouldn't be that bulky. The 3rd wire that goes straight down in that bundle is for your temperature gauge sender in the cylinder head.
