AC Compressor seized after fresh R-12 charge Tips for proper compressor swap, please
I'm going to obtain the rebuilt compressor.
I'm having my system evac'd today.
Besides the obvious (new belt, compressor swap, lube o-rings or ?)
Need I seek out and replace the Expansion Tube (Orifice)?
I never saw the AC system hoses open.
Look like they never were, also.
I just had evac'd and recharged.
Two days later....
Oh well, that's racing....
Tips, thanks!
I got tips.
Salgado - $165 compressor
Unique Auto Exchange - $140 compressor (East LA, also). Good thing is they also sell the Smog Pump I need for my Blazer at $25!!
CAN YOU SAY BEST BREAKFAST BURRITOS! OLE!
BUMMER
I need purchase the expansion orifice and the accumlator tube, too. Gotta find those now...
AH the price of avoiding new car payments!
Anyone want to buy a factory fresh/ram air set up for a Camaro?
Fresh repaint, behind front nose side panels, air filters, that thing between radiator support and nose, shiny Dzus fastners, all the stuff. Looks brand new.
Email for pics...

Why would you need the expansion orifice? Isn't that the piece in the a/c hard line, located on the passenger side's main frame rail? And what piece is the accumulator "tube"? Do you mean the whole silver accumulator? JCWhitney's sells 'em for $20.

When I put a new compressor on 2 months ago, i replaced the orifice tube and the accumulator, also.
It's pretty straight forward. My GM/Harrison compressor didn't come with oil so we had to find out the exact amount of PAG oil to add (forgot the amount....8 oz.?????). Other than that, it's easy.
I paid $220 for a GM compressor, accumulator, o-tube and some r134.

This is prabably a stupid question guys , but , What are all the parts with the AC ? ....B/c a few weeks ago we had my Moms compressor changed on her car , it was $850 ..parts and labor . But another shop quoted us $1500 !!!! I could not belive that the same shop 3 years ago put a whole new AC in my car for $900 ...
Karl ,
They also changed those other parts on my moms car .So it must be a standard procedure . My uncle was telling me it has something to do with part of it being contaminated with particles from the old ac . Something like that , i dont rememver his exact words .

Well, the orifice tubes do get "plugged" up after time. As for the Accumulator, GM actually recommends replacement every 5 years but NOBODY does it.
If you came in to my work and had the Compressor, Accumulator and o-tube replace, plus freon re-charged.....I'd guess at around $900 in PARTS ONLY. Plus labor of 3-4 hours....$1200 easy. I don't know how people afford it. Maybe it's America's addiction to credit. Just today i replaced a fuel pump module on a 98 ******* Van....$688 for the fuel pump ONLY. Plus 3 hrs labor.... ~$1000. I could replace my fuel pump for $65.

wait we can say *** on here ?
I see a Monty Python skit coming on now.....
Yeah I was told dryer & orifice & then system is good.
I'm happy the "AC Radiator" didn't have a pin hole in it.
Before I had this car, it was involved in a front end accident.
Not a big deal at all this AC rebuild, but, drag is that of course that AC belt is the last one!
There a place close by that has the stuff (o-ring, oils orifice & dryer).
I got a name in Torrance, also.
There is also my Business Yellow Pages (vintage 1995 Los Angeles).
Hope to have this AC going by Mon.
Really felt like a king, stuck in LA traffic, KLON 88.1 Jazz Radio & relaxing, cool.......
My Helms fctory shop manual book has the oil quantity amounts Dan.
Love having those books as reference.

Karl, would you be kind enough to post those exact amounts to fill a completely empty system?
I just today found out my compressor is shot, so I'm going to have to plop down some money to have it taken care of. I'm pretty sure I can replace the parts, but the refilling I'm uncertain about...
Perhaps I'll have to look into those DIY recharge kits...

I have the S-10 Blazer Helms book by me
This is the reference I quote.
Will be same for 3rd gen's?
Most likely almost exact oil usage...
FOR R-12 ONLY!!!
Use 525 viscosity refrigerant oil
I'm going to highlite quantities & parts.
Alot of typing & I must do things today.
BUT this is an education for myself, also.
let's go...
Discharging the CCOT AC System
When system dischagrged, measure record amount & discard the collected refrig oil (I had mine evac'd by modern system, so no knowledge how much I had).
IF quantity is 15 ml (1/2 oz or more) this amount of new 525 oil must be added to system
IF adding oil is necessary, remove the suction hose at accumlator outlet pipe connection & pour correct amount in hose or pipe, then reconnect (new o ring & proper torquing connections)
Meaurements (from the book)
R4 compressor (is what we tend to have under our hood, small, short round) - 180 ml (6 fluid ounces)
NEW oil quanitites must be added to the system during component replacement & condtions stated as follows-
WHEN THERE ARE NO SIGNS OF LEAKAGE...
Compressor -Remove, drain measure, replace same amount + 1 oz (above says 6, I am swapping out old for new rebuilt, I'll add 6 oz)
Evaporator - 3 oz (not touching
Condensor - 1 oz (not touching)
Accumulator-(I am replacing this)- remove, drain oil, replace same PLUS 2 oz for dessicant (that retained oil, soaked it up).
Only other connection I touch is the orifice (particle filter unit)
NOW....
Accumulator (I'm replacing)
R-4 Compressor system
IF new accumulator, fluid added must be 2 oz additional oil (to what poured out from original item).
Charging, usually 4 pounds.
Does this assist?
Is evaporator in the car interior at firewall - YES
Is condensor at the front at the radiator? - YES
Good luck too!
