chech engine light is blinking...did i fry my ECM???

i know this is probably the wrong board to post this on, but i know that you guys have the best knowledge of ECMs etc. so i thought i would ask here.

i have a custom made EPROM in my car, and the ECM is the stock 8746.

i drove my car to work and everything was fine. i went out for lunch, teh car started fine. i went out to get my t-tops off and it stalled. i went back to the car and tried to start it again. it started, ran horribly, and the check engine light was blinking like crazy. it was an extraordinary coincidence that i happened to have a 7730 ECM just sitting in the back seat that i tried out a month ago and forgot to take out. i pulled the old one out and replaced it with the other and the car was fine.

from what i have learned, the blinking check engine light is when either there is no EPROM in the ECM or the ECM is fried. am i right? i havent had time yet to pull out the EPROM and make sure that somehow it didnt get messed up. i was jus going to plug it into my pocket programmer to see if it would read it. i did however look to see that it is seated correctly into the socket, and it was.

i can deal with the fact that i may have fried my ECM. but, if that is the case, doesnt that usually happen for a reason? is there something that could have happened that screwed it up?

thanks a lot guys...

No, it means you have an SES code and it could be a LOT of things.

Read the code first, and start from there. You SHOULD have a scan tool. It will tell you instantly what the SES code is. Don't assume anything right now.

BTW, if you eprom was not properly erased, you can get erroneous errors. Before I went to flash proms, I would get a Code 32 - EGR if I didn't erase my eprom long enough. You must always increase the erase times everytime you want to re-program an eprom, or the new program will not "take" properly and you might get an SES code.

Also, could be a bad sensor...but READ THE CODE FIRST.

well, the car ran good with that particular EPROM for many weeks prior to this...so i am assuming that it is not a problem with the EPROM.

i will get the code tomorrow morning or tonight...but i had always thought that a rapid "strobe light" SES light meant that there was a problem with the ECM.

ill let you know what i find...

thanks.
