Hey guys. Got a 69 Camaro that I will be going with TPI. My question is in regards with what is the best way to go as far as controlling it. I will be putting aluminum heads on it, ported Edelbrock base, and plenum. AS & M large tube runners. Going with a roller cam too. Lots of changes but once they're made, I'm done. Won't be changing it afterwards.

I recently scored a used Holley MPI 950 Commander with harness. Thought that was the way to go but it was pointed out tht if something goes wrong with that unit and I'm away from home, I'm out of luck. With a 730 ecm, I could have multiple chips burned with my tune to have in reserve. Given the fact that once I have my "tune" done, and am not changing it, do I need the Commander? I have heard that the Commander is difficult to get the idle tuned in and it doesn't always hold the tune in its memory.

Would I better off getting an EBL Flash to make it easier to get the tune done and then be done with it? Just get a datalogger and have somebody burn the chips for me? Skip the Flash and get a flashable chip and buy the appropriate hardware from moates? Just exactly what would I need to go the moates route?

A hundred questions I know. TGO has the rep of having the most knowledgeable self tuners on the web so I figured I'd get your opinions. Thanks.

I've got an EBL in my formula. Only got a couple hours of tweaking here and there, works superb. Great customer support. Works well as a tool and not just engine management also

Another vote for EBL P4 Flash...
It will do everything you need with "stock" ecm...
Plus it has 8 banks... you can make 8 tunes, then switch from one to the next, see which works best... has stuff for boost, nitrous, etc...
With the 730 ECM, I think I changed 1 wire and added 2, and it came up no problems.
Highly recommended...

If you have a 730 ECM and you TPI setup is MAP, again, 3 wires I had to change...
If you have a MAF TPI, you basically have to change it over to MAP, more wiring... but the 730 ECM has the highest resolution / speed compared to the other older ECM's, so I would go 730 + EBL P4 Flash...

Like I said, I am starting fresh. I am a total noob to efi tuning. I am planning to get my engine setup with the planned mods I outlined it, tune it, then drive it. I have a used 950 Holley MPI Commander in the box. Taking what I posted earlier in account, you are all saying the EBL Flash is the way to do it. Okay. Now, what do I need besides a laptop to tune using an EBL assuming I go that way (heavily leaning towards it after item about it holding 8 separate tunes)? Thanks a bunch for the replies.

3, and 2 were for the USB cable to PC...
It was at the harness where the wires went into the ECM, and only took a couple minutes.

I installed an EBL in my 91 Silverado. Best money ever spend spend on a "mod" - If you have ever tuned before, such as LS stuff with HP Tuners, learning is a breeze. Even with no experience, there is so much info available on the net to get you started.

the FAST ez EFI classic and 2.0 are self tuning, req no laptop, and the 2.0 controls timing. you would need pn 302000 for the classic and the 2.0 you would need 30404-kit and the distributor to go with it is 305005.

Sorry, Quick. I would never ever consider a Fast E-Z. That would be like dropping $1500 to have somebody drive my car for me. I have done everything on my car except the paint and the transmission. Rebuilt engine, front end, changed out rear end, interior, etc. I'm a hotrodder and I want to have control and know what is going on with my engine and its fuel/spark management instead of relying on somebody else's programming. Just a quirk of mine.

you still can control the perimeters to some degree. im the same way, I want to do everything I can on my ride. iv been down the chip burning road and I had some decent work done but it took a while and that was a few years ago. now theres nobody around here that burns chips plus I dont want to go down that road again.

the other nice thing about self learn, when I make a change I my motor or I build a completely diff setup I don't have to stand in line and wait to be tuned, I set the perimeters, get some baseline, and start driving.

but to each their own.

Not my cup of tea. Besides, the point is moot for me. The FIRST tpi I picked up came with an EBL flash P4 so that's what I'll be using. Can't wait to start getting into it.
