29c256 prom still doesn't work
Got the replacement pocket programmer yesterday and it still does not program on my laptop. It does, however, program on my desktop. I'm starting to think that my old 386 Toshiba laptop is just too old. Anyone have success with a 396 laptop?

Jason, here is the scoop on my two computers (I haven't tried my Windows ME machine).
#1 - Compaq 266mhz W98SE 64 MB of RAM. FILEPROM V3.55 will crash my system when I exit. This was back when I was using 27C256s, so I have never tried AT29C256s on it (but I think I will just for the hell of it). I tried using Windows PP and that works fine. But I do not use this computer for my PROM burning.
#2 - Toshiba 486 75mhz 32 MB of RAM. FILEPROM V3.55 works fine and dandy on this machine with ALL eproms I have tried (27C128s, 27C256s and AT29C256). However, Windows PP will not work on this one. It will load the Hex FF bin fine...it comes up "BLANK/Erased" fine...but when I go to program with the Windows Version it gets "hung up" somewhere on the download. The place varies all the time, but the Windows Version will not program.
This is kind of a pity because I liked the Windows Version and this is the machine I want to use for my PROM burning.
Let's see if other have similar problems I know a few others are.

I'm using a 386/25mhz(don't remember the brand name off hand) 4megs of ram, 60meg HD. It writes each chip just fine. I don't have a problem anywhere. I haven't used the windows software, the 386laptop works so well and it sits right next to my desktop computer so that i can leave the fileprom.exe running all of the time..
At the very least you CAN write those chips though..

Well if your old 386 works, then mine should work too. What version of fileprom are you using? Did you have to change any of your BIOS settings or anything in your config.sys file?

I am using Version 3.55 of FILEPROM. As I said, it works fine on my Toshiba (slower machine), but crashes my Compaq (faster machine).
And the Windows Version works fine on my Compaq, but not the Toshiba.

I don't recall the fileprom version that i'm using(i'm at work or i would check). The 386 laptop is completely formatted other than for a sys copy of a win98 boot disk and diacom+fileprom software. The config sys has one line of code to define common paths(for batch files to work). I didn't change anything in the bios either. There is probly like 2 things to change anyways, beings how old that thing is

There is a bit of confusion about pre loading FFs in flash parts – What you really want to do is to have FF’s in the buffer before you load the file. – This is because flash parts will only erase 64byte blocks if they are being programmed – thus what is left in the chip / or buffer will get put in the chip.

Thanks for the response Karl. If there is some way to get the Windows Version to work on my old Toshiba T1910, I WILL buy it. But, my Toshiba does not seem to like it

Put me on the list also. I can burn the 27C256 chips like a dream, but when I try an AT29C256, it won't do it at all. I have a Gateway Pentium III 450mhz.
It will program the buffer when I load it with FFs, and it will "blank check" normally, but any BIN file and forget it. Nothing.

I'm running Windows ME on my laptop. So far I am getting around a 65% first try success rate when programming the AT29C256 chips. The other chips will program after several attemps.
