Auto to T56 swap..need tuning help!!!

I've read mixed information about tuning regarding this swap. I have everything needed to make the changes but I'm not sure what exactly needs to be done. I already changed the flag/switch to manual and I have the Dakota Digital SGI box to convert the VSS signal, but what else? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Re: Auto to T56 swap..need tuning help!!!

was there a specific question you had? there is a lot of info posted on this swap; so if you had a specific question that would be helpful.

I switched to a manual bin (axxd i believe) and worked my tune from there; at the time I made this swap (years ago) there was "unknowns" about using an auto bin in a t56. maybe that's cleared up by now, i haven't been following diyprom for a while; but anyways i have a t56 in my '91 L98, so if you have specific questions, feel free to post them...

I'm working on using a manual bin (ARAP which is the manual version of the APYN (165 ECM) A few months back I had a chip burned for my car so now using TunerPro with the compare feature between my old tune and the manual bin I see I would make changes for spark advance and fan temperatures etc but I also see different values for MAF tables among other things. Am I basically going through everything and if the numbers are different between the two files then change the numbers in the manual file to match the numbers from the tune?

I'm not sure if since it's a manual BIN then that means there are certain numbers I should be leaving. Like idle rpm vs coolant temperature, highway mode a/f ratio, highway mode spark advance etc. Another thing is all the TCC categories (lock speed, unlock speed, in 4th, not in 4th), if it's a manual BIN then why are their still parameters for TCC under tables/functions?

Thanks

Both ARAP and APYN are auto calibrations. ARAP for the y-body and APYN for the f-body.

In the f-body world for stick tranny's is APYS. Note that it is an LB9 calibration.

In the y-body world there is ANYP. For an L98 with a 6-spd. Note that the y-body used different heads then the f-body L98's.

Re: Auto to T56 swap..need tuning help!!!

parameters for things like TCC are also in manual bins as you observed, that's just how it is; and the values are unused.

Regarding some of the tables you mentioned - if it were me, I'd find the newest MAF bin and use the MAF tables from it, GM refined the MAF calibration over time; i think ARAP has the best refinement of the MAF tables (but I'm an $8D SD guy, so double check that).

highway mode is kind of a personal opinion.

idle rpm is also somewhat of a personal opinion..

a lot of the tables can be re-used from an auto bin; others are just going to be different due to the nature of the swap (AE / "accelerator pump" type functions in particular act differently on a manual, in my experience).

How do I know which values should be left alone due to the nature of the swap if they are found in both files?

BTW all this info is great, thank you, I feel like I can finally start making progress

While my answer may not be as helpful as you were looking for, it worked for me when I made the swap:

you have to evaluate what each table/value does and make a decision about it, case by case.

in some cases, the answer is clear (such as for TCC tables - you can just ignore them since you aren't using them).

in some cases, the answer is probably clear (such as using ARAP MAF tables - we assume they are the most accurage MAF values from GM).

in some cases, the answer is gray (such as Accel enrich. You can look at 305 auto vs. 305 stick and make some general assumptions about how a 350 stick should look vs. a 350 auto; and you might choose to copy some of the values from the 305 stick cal; but the reality is that you will need to further refine/tune these values once the car is running anyways).

you just have to evaluate case by case and decide what you want to do after thinking about each one. if you aren't sure for specific tables or values, post those up and we can discuss it.

That makes sense, I'm just nervous I'll screw something up.

Not to hijack the thread, but does anyone have an ANYP bin they can post? I can't find one in any of the usual places.

Thanks.

I ran mine exactly as you now have it for a few weeks, and aside from mildly-annoying idle behavior it was fine.

When coming to a stop, the ECM would hold the idle at ~1200rpm or so until a second or so after I came to a complete stop. Again, just a minor nuisance.

I later upgraded to a Vette manual trans bin...and then later went to Speed Density...and then later went to an LS1.

What did you have to change to use the vette manual trans bin? I'm guessing you used the ANYP bin?

Re: Auto to T56 swap..need tuning help!!!

Guys, the info you need is pretty much right here on Thirdgen.org.

By doing a quick search, I found the thread from 2002 where the subject was discussed:

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/diy-...vette-bin.html

I was running AXCN right up until I swapped in the LS1 powertrain in 2004, it was great.

My notes were on index cards and no clue where they are, but I recall having to disable the oil temp sensor as it was setting the CE light...there isn't an oil temp sensor on the F-body.

I verified AXCN is still available from the GM-ECM bin library, in fact two versions are there. Grab both, compare and start burning. AXCN has a very hot spark map as the Vette had aluminum heads, but so did my engine at the time. Run it on an iron-head engine and you're asking for trouble.
