Electric speedo connector pinout vs 85 mechanical

These are the pinouts for the gauge cluster connectors. I have been asked about them and needed somewhere to post them. Going to an electric speedo cluster isnt as simple as plugging wiring the speedo like I had hoped. I will soon be repinning the connectors to try to get all of my gauges and speedo working correctly. I have clusters from 85, 86, 87, and 89. All of them other than the 85(mech speedo) seem to be pinned the same) Here is the pinouts for an 87 Trans Am Electric cluster.

Here is a chart I am working on to aid in repinning the dash. I re-numbered them myself so that there would not be 2 of each number since there will be some wires going from one connector to the other. So just keep in mind that if there are numbers on the connector that they will not be associated with my numbering. My diagram is assuming that you are looking into the dash at the actual connectors. On the rows of numbers the top row of each pair represents the postition on the connector. The bottom row of each pair shows that a wire from the postion numbered needs to be moved to this postion.

I still need to add a couple notes to it. One is that you will notice that the wire from position 5 has to go to 2 places. This is because there is only 1 ilumination wire on the 85s and 2 on the later clusters. Also the X's are where no wire is required. This also includes the spot where the normal wire from the speedo went to the computer and one or 2 more that I dont feel will be used for anything on this cluster. I will update it when I get a chance to work on it some more.

If anyone knows a less confusing way to represent this pm me and we can talk. I think this is a great deal easier than just looking between the 2 diagrams posted earlier. Let me tell you it wasnt exactly easy to get it figured out to this point.

Where did you get the overlays? Do they do any customization. On one of my clusters I have the 8 grand tach and would like to have my redline up around 6000. I have like 3 140 clusters and the only one i have come across with the higher tach was out of a 89 GTA w 350.

I got them at a place called ProCarParts on eBay is where I found them...At night, you turn on the lights, and just the numbers and lines illuminate in either blue or green. They looked sweet in the ad. I think I paid way too much for them. Do a search on ebay, there's a guy who custom makes them, I think for 40 bucks or something like that. The only thing I don't like about mine are the big spaces on the right two guages between the different indicators. Don't know why they didn't fill those in. I took out all the bulbs from the cluster, though, so when I turn on the lights, just the indiglo will be evident without the backlighting.

www.picturetrail.com/momar01 There are some pics there. Most of them are from the time when my car was appart and in the process of going back together. The senior pic is a couple years ago. The paint on the hood is peeling now, and it is starting to on the front of the roof. I need to get it painted, but cant afford it right now.

Sweet pics...what did you use on those headers? I just got my headmans in yesterday, and they are going to the sandblast pit probably next weekend. I think I'm just going to VHT them with 1500 silver and bake....save a little dough that way....

I went with the shorty/y-pipe version to ease my installation woes...how did yours work out with the oddball floorpans we have? Looked pretty smooth, but aren't they low riding? How much did you spend on the jet-hot coating?

Could you post another view or 2? It looks like it is, but it also looks like the wires are cut pretty short which will make it a pain.

There aren't any wires there at all, I don't think...just places for connectors...is that bad??? OMG I hope not....

on another tangent...does the corvette servo/boosters help alot? I know I'm not pleased with my 700r4 perfomance after a rebuild with small shift kit....

It appears to be the box, but where did you get it? If from a junk yard I would go and clip the harness off of it so you can connect the wires to where they need to go.

Here is the pic out of the tech article.

It appears to be the right thing but will be hard to use without the connectors.

When I pulled out my old cluster I confirmed that the pinouts that origionally said that the had something to do with the buffer(3 of them) were for the speedo mounted vss. Those are not used so the chart I made should be correct. The only one I still dont know about is the 470 ohms to generator. This is listed on the new cluster so supposedly we should have it on the new ones, but I dont know what function it performs, and it is not on the old one to repin on the new one. One of my friends (@zzkker) repinned my dash according to the chart I made, but I have all of the accessories and starter off of my car because I just fixed an oil leak so I havent been able to test it yet.

I know this is an old post, but this writeup works perfectly! Just be sure to not break any of the connectors... they're a bitch to find...
