well im having problems getting gas to the engine, so im going to try replacing the relay. i bought it at autozone and when i came back home i popped open the hood and noticed that all three relays look the same? which one is the actual fuel pump relay? thanks!

The fuel pump relay will have an orange, green, grey, and black/white wires on it. There is also an easy way to test if the relay is bad, remove the relay and jump across the orange and grey wires and the pump should run. Also check to make sure the computer is commanding it on take a test light and jump the green and black/white wires and trun on the key it should light up for a short time then go out.

i replaced the relay, and also tried to "jump" the wires to see if the pump works, but i get nothing. i guess ill try replacing the opsu, but if that fails, i noticed someone talkin about replacing the sending unit? if so what and where is that located?

one more question, i believe their is 3 cables going to the pump, 1.black 2. purple 3. grey, well i checked the cables for current using a tester, and only the grey cable turns on when the key is in on position. i know the black is ground, but what about the purple one? should this one have current to?

Black is ground, grey is the fuel pump 12v, and the purple is the sending unit (gas gauge). If you turn the key on and the grey wire has power on it and the fuel pump is not running then the pump is bad. But I like to double check every thing so make sure that the black wire is a good ground and if it is then the pump bad.


btw the sending unit and pump are all in the tank

On the 90 - 92 models there is a red wire with a connector on it that is located in the wire bundle near the fuel pump relay. That is the test lead for the fuel pump. You might also want to look around the area of the battery for a 20 AMP in-line fuse, that controls power to the fuel pump relay. Just a thought!!!!!!!

i agree with trickster about checkin the 20amp fuse on the fender rail...b/c i thought my fuel pump was out and it took me forever tryin to figure out if it was bad or not...i replaced the relay and tried energizing the fuel pump but nothing happend...until i replaced the fuse which was blown and then the fuel pump worked and im glad i figured that out before droppin the fuel tank and replacing the fuel pump....so check the fuse man... before u do anything else....

The fuel pump relay will not have the thick PWR wire coming out of it like the two fan relays. The two fan relay connectors ("bases") also should be grey while the fuel pump connector is black (at least on my 1991)...Don't do what I did and cut the fuel pump relay off thinking it was an old fan relay you didn't need

And defenitly don't rack your brain when the fuel pump won't prime AGAIN (the first time being the cutting off of the relay). Turns out the ECM was sitting right inside the house and defenitly not in the car

Check the fuse and then if you suspect the relay is bad (for future reference) the fan relays will work (are the same) as the fuel pump relay. Just switch them out.
