electrical starting issue?

87 chevy camaro 2.8 v6 manual.. starter and solenoidare good.. fusible links are getting power on both sides of wires.. purple signal wire is getting power at crank. battery checked out as bad at pepboys yet the horn blows loud the lights are bright and everything seems as if they are running at high power.. fuses under dash are good. ...it only cranks when it feels like and it doesnt even click when it doesnt start.. i heard that when the clutch start switch is unplugged you can crank it without putting the clutch to the floor. what could it be? can a battery really be that bad?

Re: electrical starting issue?

Starter draws alot of amps - horns, lights, etc don't draw alot - so they can function great with a bad battery. Voltage isn't an issue - it's amps. Plenty of batteries with bad cells, corroded plates, etc. will run lights and not starter.

Re: electrical starting issue?

How old is the battery? Might still be under warranty, although they won't replace it for free (battery warranties are usually prorated). And if it's too old, it's probably bad for sure.

Re: electrical starting issue?

check the relay by the drivers side kick pannel. there is a relay there. use a jumper on the big 2 wires on the relay. im sure it will start. i had a simmilar problem last week. still have to trace down the issue but it should start.

Yes, that's it.

BUT ... YOU don't have a relay there - that was only on VATS cars, and you don't have VATS.

Re: electrical starting issue?

yeah.. i took the junkyard battery to conway and they said the battery is weak but with a jumper cable on it the car should atleast attempt to crank...its doing it again.. so it has to be electrical.. someone walk me through every single thing i have to test.. the signal wire is getting power so im guessing everything b4 that is good... but the atsrter is also good.. its sitting on clean metal so its grounded well... im really starting to get angry....unless someone wants to come over and check it out for me lol

Car Is Not Cranky ▬ So You Are

You said the purple wire gets power when you try to start.

Connect a lightbulb across the
purple wire at the solenoid and ground.

If it lights when you try to start, but no cranking, you have a bad connection immediately adjacent to the test lightbulb connection, or the starter is bad.

Happy Racing!

How bout those too scared to drive without headlights in the daytime and the ones that need headlights for a little rain

Re: Car Is Not Cranky ▬ So You Are

i feel stupid because i read that statement 5 times and didnt really understand it....the wire got juice but it doesnt crank.. that means that i have a problem where?...every batt i got out of the junkyard was bad.. even this new one i just got.. but i put it in and it immediatly started cranking easily.. and eventually it started doing it again... its gatta be a battery.
