guide to shutoff switches on thirdgen race cars

Dear Electronic Gurus,

I am wiring up my longacre shutoff switch and I am have some questions. The first time i wired it up just using A post and B post to cut the positive. Boy do I feel dumb. Alternator keeps powering engine even without battery. This is a 4 pole switch and i was only using 2. duh...

Now I am getting smarter. I have started by removing a bunch of old wiring and preparing to put in new.

I just need to know 1 thing. Do the Orange wires for the ECM and Orange wires for the Fuel pump go to the "A" side of the switch?

OR

do the orange wires for the ECM and Fuel Pump go to the "B" side (or a junction box or off alternator).

I just drew a horrible picture to denote what my question is... can anybody advise me? ( I am running the fans direct off the battery and switching negative on them, so I am good for them )

Re: Searched but still need help with shutoff switch

Everything goes down stream of the cutout so when it is opened nothing gets power.
All you have to work out now is how to isolate the Alt
Recall some cutouts have a another set of contacts or a relay for this purpose

Re: Searched but still need help with shutoff switch

I got it figured out guys.

I actually called the distributor and they got the Longacre Rep on the phone with me.

I explained to Mr. Longacre Rep the concern shared by many on this board (and many other auto forums) that the Alternator spike with nowhere to go will return to the alternator and burn it up..

He asked me what product I had, i told him the 4 pole Longacre switch and he said "Good, you're OK" -- then proceeded to tell me how longacre has resistors built INSIDE the swtich to allow the voltage spike to be absorbed by the switch. THUS, I could wire my 4 pole, single wire alternator as shown in the following picture (the TOP half).

http://www.longacreracing.com/instru...ext/4578PI.pdf

So, basically, i will use my 4 Pole as described in THIS picture and all will be right with the world. I order some new 8 Gauge wire for the alternator run and I will report back here with pictures and show you guys what I ended up doing. According to Longacre, when the product is used as the instructions say, you are protected against these sudden spikes from alternator disconnect. YMMV, i'll let you know about mine.

Thanks!
