Steering column stuff

Ok so I took the ignition switch out and yea what a PITA!!!! Anyways, what is the rod for that goes into the ignition switch from the column???? I know the other one is a dimmer one but is it possible to just not reinsert that other rod or does it serve some real purpose???

I have searched on here and I haven't read anywhere about anyone just leaving this rod out....

By the way this car is pretty much a track car so im not to concerned with it being stolen....

Why does it seem everyone who posts lately is from the make a wish foundation ?

Think that maybe that rod is what makes a physical connection from the key cylinder to the actual ignition switch to start the car ?
