aldl to obd II?

For whatever reason, any time im driving and get the engine around 3500 rpm's or i driveo n the highway for a while, my check engine light comes on. I'de love to just hook up one of those cheap obd II diagnostic tools and use an app on my phone, but my 88 has ALDL. Do i have to buy a diagnostic tool, or are there ALDL - OBD adapters, or maybe some kind of new ALDL tool that's cheap and easy to use? I really don't have the money to go out and buy a 200$ tool. ive found alot of aldl to usb cables, but they're still 50$ minimum. does anybody know anything cheaper?

Your car is OBDI
Nothing you see for OBDII ( like phone apps ) will work no matter what cable / adapter / thingy you use

OBD 2 is the new system thats been on vehicles since 1996. Some 1995 vehicles got obd2. Anything previous would be obd1. So our cars would be obd1. ALDL is just the name of the connector under the dash. I think is stands for Assembly Line Diagnostic Link. OBD stands for On Board Diagnostics. You can get cables or make them to hook up to a laptop or other devices. Can find out all kinds of info in the ecm forums. I've havent had the need to make or buy cables since I have my own scanner.

Depends if he just wants to read the DTC's or to datalog the engine. Looking at the online info, the OBDII phone
app displays info that is not available from the OBDI system anyway
A paperclip will display the codes for free

The ALDL cable for $50 he is complaining about is the cheapest available and only required for data logging
