Tail Light issues

dose anyone out there have a wiring diagram for an 87 GTA with Digital dash?

im trying to figure out why none my taillights don't work and the wiring is all kinds of weird.

here's what i got so far,
the light in the hatch works fine. but no power at the actual back lights.

there is power going in and coming out of the brake switch. according to the diagrams i have, there should be a light blue wire running straight from there to the taillights. but instead, the light blue wire goes threw a connector and turns white, and from there instead of going towards the back, it goes up into the dash somewhere.

out at the taillights, there is no light blue wire or even a white wire. (only looking at the driver side right now) but there are yellow and purple wires. the light green for the reverse lights is the only thing that matches my diagram.

im missing something i just know it.

Hopefully the PO didn’t mess it up.

On your car the
light blue wire goes to the Hazard Switch.

Probe the
White wire at the Hazard Switch when the Brake Pedal is pressed.

Is there power there?

If yes, probe the
yellow wire.

Is there power there?

If yes, try to operate the Hazard Lights.

Do they work?

Re: Tail Light issues

Seems like your reading a wiring schematic for a Firebird rather than the digiital dash Trans AM.

My 88 GTA (Digital Dash) has Purple wires @ the tail light harness. The purple wire appears to feed power to the LH rear lights. The wires feeding the RH rear lights should be Brown/White.

The Digital Dash Trans AM / GTA has Yellow (Left hand) & the Dark Green (Right hand) wires for the turn/stop Lights.

** On Firebird with Digital Dash,..... LIGHT BLUE wires feeds all the Brake lights in the rear !

True, however crazyjc15 is not getting power on those wires based on his post.

On his car there is no direct connection from the brake pedal terminal primary SPSTNO to the brake lights.

When crazyjc15 does the test in post #2 we will know more.

Re: Tail Light issues

I saw where you were leading him NINA,.... He was chasing a Blue wire to the tail lights & I was pointing out the fact that there should be no Blue wires in his tail-light harness and that he might be looking at the wrong schematic.

crazyjc15; Your title says tail lights,... but your describing problem with the stop lights.

The TAIL LIGHTS on your car get power thru the PURPLE wires on the Left and the BROWN/WHITE wires on the Right. (black = ground )

The STOP LIGHTS on your car get power thru the YELLOW wires on the Left and DARK GREEN wires on the Right. (black = ground)

The white wire you were chasing off the brake switch leads up into the steering column to the TURN/HAZARD switch, as NINA describes.....

Here are a few schematics covering the 88 GTA that seem to match your car better than what your working with at the moment.

( click the link for FULL SIZED pics. )

TAIL LIGHTS :

STOP LIGHTS

Short answer:
If your getting power thru WHITE, but no power thru YELLOW when the brake switch is closed,.. the TURN/HAZARD switch is suspect.
