Fan and Fuel Pump Relay and Connector Upgrade to newer Delphi

I have needed to replace my Fan and Fuel Pump relay connectors for a while, since by the connector there is bare wire. I have the old flat style relay connector.s not the newer Delphi Metri-Pack.

Is it better to change to the Delphi relay connectors or does it really matter?

I think the old flat style connector is called 'Pack Con'.

Thanks!

Re: Fan and Fuel Pump Relay and Connector Upgrade to newer Delphi

The newer Delphi connector you show is just allowing a more water tight connection and less chance for corrosion. I actually went backwards on my relays and redid everything to accept the standard Bosch relays. I was tired of paying $8 per relay and only being able to buy them at auto parts stores. I've had it that way for 5 years and no problems. Driven in the rain before too.

Lol, that's funny, I was thinking about doing the same thing!

Do you use the generic 'bosch style' relay or do you use a particular brand?

Also, what amp rating do you use for dual fans? What amp rating for fuel pump?

Thanks for the reply!

I use whatever brand Bosch style relay is being sold, never had problems with relays because they were x brand. Use 30 amp relays and be sure to use one per fan.

bwmcam What did you end up doing? I'm in need to replace my fuel pump relay connector and need to source a new plug.

Re: Fan and Fuel Pump Relay and Connector Upgrade to newer Delphi

I ended up replacing all of the relays with the $6.00 ones from AutoZone. These are the SPST 4 post 30amp fan relays. After doing this you can actually just use the 5 post SPST 30 or 40amp ones for all of them. Either way it works

Fan relays again

Here is the fuel pump relay, you just have to make sure it primes etc.

Re: Fan and Fuel Pump Relay and Connector Upgrade to newer Delphi

This beats buying them at $15.00-$20.00 per relay since I had to replace all three.

i just zip tied the fan relays and put the screw in the fuel pump relay, I still need to go through the engine harness and make it look better.

Do you have a part number? I have just the fuel pump relay. Also do you have a drawing on how you wired the fuel pump relay?

Re: Fan and Fuel Pump Relay and Connector Upgrade to newer Delphi

This is the fuel pump relay, it is made by Hella and I found it by the fog lights in AutoZone, they may have it in the electrical isle. It is a 5 pin, look for a 30 amp 5 pin that has the same diagram on top as this one. Not sure of the part number, sorry.

I found this on the Austinthirdgen website, I have a 87 5.7 v8

The fuel pump was a little more complicated than the fan relays, so I wrote down a conversion chart. Top is the original factory relay connectors ==>then the wire colors==>then the Hella terminal numbers

This is the fan relay part number I used it is a dorman

Re: Fan and Fuel Pump Relay and Connector Upgrade to newer Delphi

This is also from the Austinthirdgen website, it shows the fan relay wiring in the bottom right corner. I did not follow it exactly since both of the fans come on at the same time, they both switch on together from the same wire. Normally, you will have a computer controlled wire and a temp sensor in the passenger cylinder head. I have EBL and control both from the computer, though I had to bump up the IAC steps to keep the engine from dying when both the fans come on.

P.S. I do have one relay per fan. Here is the fan wiring closer. I printed it out.

Re: Fan and Fuel Pump Relay and Connector Upgrade to newer Delphi

Relays are pretty simple, I watched a few YouTube videos to figure it out

Re: Fan and Fuel Pump Relay and Connector Upgrade to newer Delphi

Not high jacking it's relevant
My car is a 1991 Firebird originally a 305 TBI car. A good number of years ago I swapped in a 350 TPI and engine harness from a 1989 GTA. I sent the engine harness out to a company to convert the GTA harness to a speed density system. They did what I needed them to do and I've had no major issues. They kept the 89 fuel pump relay pack con connector and I am upgrading to Delphi style. On the pack con the terminals are labeled ABCDE and on the Delphi their labeled ACDEF. Do you know if A on the pack con is A on the Delhi? C is C? D is ? E is E? Does that make B is F? Another thing that is tripping me up is the a color change on one wire on the drawing for the 89 and on the 91 drawing. The one wire that is different is on the 89 drawing a tan w/white stripe is a grey wire on the 91 drawing.
Any insight would be helpful.
