What 350 can I put in 86 Trans am?

I got an 86 trans am with all original conponets. (305), 994856 original miles on.. it had it for 5 years.

What (and where), kinda 350 motor can I put in her and swap all conponents to the 350 motor?
Rochester 4bbl Carb, intake manifold, exhast pipes, smog pump, water etc etc

I'm not lookin to spend alot of money just want a working 350 (block and heads) and move my stuff to it.

Please Help.

I put a 350 4bolt from an 83 suburban in mine...anything from 82 and up will drop in no problem...i just dropped a 1980 305 in mine because the 350 blew up....the only difference is the location of the oil dipstick tube in the oil pan and on the driverside....and the oil pan is longer at the bottom and hits the exhaust.....

Guess what? The '86 is a "bastard" year. It has one-piece rear main seal crank, which changes the flywheel/flexplate type. It has '86-earlier intake manifold bolt patter (which is a good thing).

So, technically, the only thing that will "drop in" is an '86.

But, all you're looking at is a $40 flexplate if you get an '85-earlier 350. If you get an '87-later engine, you're looking at elongating the center two mount bolt holes on each side of the intake manifold. If you get a '79-earlier engine, the aforementioned dipstick location is going to cause problems with stock exhaust manifolds. But, the stock exhaust is terrible, seriously consider headers while you're at it (which would solve the dipstick tube problem with '79-earlier engines).

In fact, if you don't get headers, forget the 350 entirely and spend the money on a new cam and exhaust for the 305.

And I am dead serious about that.

You need a flat-tappet, computer-compatible type. The Comp XE262 is a decent choice, as is the Crane Powermax 2050. Both need the exhaust upgrades in order to work properly.

If you aren't willing to go with a higher stall torque converter, you shouldn't go bigger than something like a Comp XE256. That's still a big jump over the stock cam.
